Brian Baker, a veteran defensive line coach who has spent time in both the NFL and Atlantic Coast Conference, has been named defensive line coach, the team announced Friday.

Baker served the last three seasons as defensive line coach of the St. Louis Rams after previously working for the Minnesota Vikings, Detroit

Lions and San Diego Chargers with the defensive line and linebackers.

“We are pleased to welcome Brian Baker to our coaching staff,” head coach John Fox said. “Brian is a veteran coach and excellent teacher who has

thorough knowledge of the game. We look forward to the energy and style he will bring to our club.”

And one of the biggest complaints lately from Rams fans is the slow development of Adam Carriker

*sigh*

IMO, he was overrated in the first place.

That's not to say that I'm doing cartwheels over this hire, but it has always been my contention that if a player is good, he will be good anywhere he goes as long as he fits the system. Coaches do not make players.

And the Rams had nothing else on DL, (some say the same for us next year, but it's before FA and the draft). I'm willing to withhold judgment...

Again John Fox mentions a coach as a "good teacher". Mark my words, we are going young, home grown so to speak. Don't expect any large FA signings. IMO they are having more confidence in their drafts with our new head of scouting and they will use that to build the defense.

    • Names I'd keep an eye on... Coby White,  Jalen Suggs, Amen Thompson  and Stephen Castle...  3 teams except Orlando has checked on Melo before and rumblings of sours getting rid of fox too. I'd think they think Melo and Wemby would make them nuclear out west.
    • Well he somehow had 12 preseason carries for not playing. He also has 20 carries in the regular season, not three. He has actually played in about 7% of the offensive snaps for this regular season(33% of the special teams snaps). This isn't stuff you have to make up, these are very easily referenced statistics, man.
    • It's not common for a RB to recover from two ACL tears in the same knee. It's fairly rare. You are correct that it isn't the career ender that it used to be but there is also the fact that we appear to have largely moved on with the additions of Dowdle and Etienne.  Dobbins is a very good example. He has basically missed 54% of his career regular season games since he came into the league in 2020. It will end up being 57% at the conclusion of this season. It's a big contributing factor to why he is on this third NFL team in 6 years. It's certainly possible that may be 4 by the beginning of next season. I would say there is very little chance that Brooks ever contributes in any meaningful way in Carolina. Possibly with another team but I am extremely skeptical of his future here because of those injuries and because of the roster.
