How smart is this Peterson kid? In all these threads talking about him, Ive yet to see anyone remark how intelligent he is or how cerebral a person he is. What's making him a "sure thing" his athletic ability alone? His coverage skills? Being a corner in the NFL, requires more than just "athleticism". You need instincts and smarts to battle against the Mannings and Bradys. We would be paying this kid a lot of money if we took him #1, and I would hope whomever we draft that high would be asked to be more than just a "mindless defensemen". We went that route with Pep, and got 3 winning seasons out of 8 with him. This kid would need to be the second coming of Deion to justify being so fiscally irresponsible dumping so much cash on a corner while continue to ignore QB.

Not taking sides here, but I agree that DBs intelligences is a bit underrated. Those guys after QBs have the toughest jobs in the league. You have to be athletic to run with 6'2 190 WR's, and you have to be smart to read the offense and make a play on the ball. They are basically the QBS of the defense. fug the linebackers. Good points..

What makes you think Newton is so smart? He can't even call his own plays. You guys act like he left Auburn top of his class.

Marino wasn't that smart either....I don't know how smart Cam is, and kind of don't care. As long as he isn't a dumbass like J Russ and Ryan Leif, has a great work ethic, wants to be the best, and can make the throws he needs to make, he is already 10 times better than Clausen.

Contradicting statement, you just said that CB's have to be smart and now you don't care if Cam's smart or not. Wow, just wow.

Do you know the definition of "contradicting" sir? Good CBs kind of have to be smart, yes, sure. Marino, maybe the best QB ever wasn't that smart. A lot of averagely smart QBs have been awesome NFL Qbs. As long as he isn't a dumbass like Leif or J Russ I'm fine..

The NFL wasn't what it was in the 80's and 90's, when Marino played. You have to have smarts to play in the NFL now and especially in this division. Brees, Freeman and Ryan have smarts.

I'm sure Cam is at least average. I doubt he is a dumbass. Maybe its just wishful thinking...

He's not worth the number one pick for us when we could probably find starting corners in the 7th round if we wanted to..and we have done in the past.

The best player of any draft is always worth the first pick. You make it seem like we can draft a 7th rounder thats just as good, no sense made here.

First off, I don't agree that he's the 3rd best QB. He's easily THE best QB, IMO. Nobody - NOBODY - in this draft has the potential Newton does and at the most important position in sports at that.

Not really that hard a decision, IMO. Some folks are just too afraid to fail to have any real chance of success.

Actually, Marino's football smarts were pretty high up there. He could read a defense in a fraction of a second and have the ball out of his hands before defenders even got close. That's why he didn't take as many sacks as a guy who was such a statue in the pocket would normally take.

      I think you have to factor in that we're still not an attractive proposition for Head Coaches. You're not getting the cream of the crop if you fire Canales a year after winning the NFC South, especially considering the situation he walked into.

      Honestly, I dont  think he should be on the hot seat yet. A bad start to next year, then yes. Despite our mistakes on play calling this past season, we played better than anticipated overall. Bryce showed improvement and maturity (although still not nowhere close to our expectations). Better record and 2-15 to 5-12 to 8-9. Despite what we feel the stats dont lie we are improving by 3 wins a year. Could 11-6 be our expectation. That's a high bar but at the rate we are going, thats what its looking like. We all want to see a 5-12 to a 13-4 record but we are methodically moving up. Success doesnt happen overnight (well in most cases).  IMO we are struggling mostly on the defensive end. LB and edge are our biggest weakness. I see Bryce making improvements (even though I was a Bryce hater) next year. Biggest concern is LT on offense. How to fix this? We need a big name edge or to trade up and get a big name edge or LB and pick up one in FA and draft one. Also if in the 3rd we can pick up a TE. Dont know if Sanders is the answer or Tremble (even though I love Trembles blocking and power after the catch). If these two can get their footwork together they would be great. Maybe all they need is a better TE coach. And if Brooks can stay healthy and be the back we thought he could be, man that would be great
