Trade down is the best option period.

Trade out of #1, take Defense later in Round 1. Pick up a 2nd this year and a first next year.

NO QB in this draft is going to turn this franchise around in 2 years. So have two picks next year to use when the QB crop should be better to get a guy to develop for a year. If you do that Rivera will have had two drafts and two free agent offseasons (hopefully) to make the TEAM better for when the kid steps in.

We need a Veteran via trade or signing to hold the reigns for 2 years at the QB position in the mean time.

Trade down!

the huddle needed this thread like it needs greg frye as a member.

this is at least the third time you've started a "trade down" thread. there have been at least twenty others.

Even if the next QB draft is better, I have yet to have anybody explain to me how we can guarantee that we get one of them. Does anybody really believe that whoever has the #1 pick next year is going to trade down and pass up on Andrew Luck, assuming that Luck even has and equal or better season? And even if they did, they would want massive compensation for him, so that is pretty much out of the question, unless it's us at #1 again.

Agreed, many people think if we don't solve our QB issues that we will undoubtedly be the worst team again and will be in line for Luck next year. As much as it pains most people to hear it, even if Clausen starts all 16 games next year, i do not believe that we will be in the bottom 5 in the league. Hell, just the coaching regime change in itself is good for another 3-4 wins in my opinion.

this reminds me of the time my buddy tried to give me a 12 pack of "quality" beer.

I asked why he wanted to get rid of approx 20 bucks worth of beer for free. He finally admitted it tastes like ass.

"Hey NFL, anybody want the shittiest #1 pick in years, real cheap!"

hahaha

If Cinci, Arizona, or Buffalo really want Newton/Gabbert, we could definitely nab an additional 2nd or 3rd rounder along with still getting either Dareus, Peterson, or Green. That would be the type of trade that makes the most sense imo

Here we go again.... :willy_nilly: ..... the mindset of passing on a QB who will take two years to develop for an unknown QB we can draft next season who will be ready either at the same time or later than a QB we could draft today who can also end up being better than this mysterious unknown QB the Panthers are supposedly going to be able to definately get next year

I have an idea..... lets keep passing on 1st round QB talent, for position players that can help us so every year we can continue to keep saying... we will use our top pick on a QB next season. :willy_nilly: That all being said I am fine passing on a QB this year if its not Cam... of course unless Hurney, Rivera, etc really think Gabbert is a better option. (I just dont see that)

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
