Now that it's almost certain Cam will be the pick, what are your thoughts?

I will honestly consider turning in my fan card of the Panthers if we draft Cam Newton and it has nothing to do with race, because EVERY other option I want is another black guy.... which doesn't even really matter. I just don't like thugs. Give me a guy with a relatively clean background and that doesn't talk in third person and I might be interested. I don't see why the position of QB is regarding with such reverence that race would make a difference.

If you feel that strongly, I would encourage you to do so. Nobody will hold a grudge if you leave us and cant get past us drafting the best QB prospect available. We all have to find our own path in life.

To me, this is just like Falcons fans saying back in the day that we would kill to have Michael Vick on our team. I always contended that I wasn't interested because he sucked as a person then. I didn't see the events that changed him so thoroughly coming and now believe that he has truly improved both personally and professionally and would love to have him now. Cam reminds me of Vick 1.0, prior to the realization that he wasn't the center of the universe and that the whole script could flip on him at a moments notice. I would honestly take Vince Young over Cam right now due to the fact that I think VY is much closer to realizing his mistakes in his career and taking full blame for his lack of success and his skill set is highly comparable to Cam's. Plus, I still do have hope that the player we invested a middle 2nd rounder on last year can pull it together and be a decent starter down the road. He needs time.

Give me a guy like Patrick Peterson with a great line of players in his family like Santana Moss and Bryant McFadden. He doesn't have the character concerns to me. He was also involved in a pay to play type scenario with a family "friend", supposedly, but who really knows what goes on there. I think PP7 is the closest thing we have in this draft to a true game changer that we know to be a game changer right now. The best CB to come out since Deion, in my estimation. We need that kind of player.

For every fan card you turn in if he does well the Panthers will be handing two new fan cards out. Hardly knew ya.

I probably couldn't do it, but taking Cam would be as thoroughly frustrating to me as taking Gabbert, who hasn't even proven he could throw the ball effectively in the college game. How people could want either confuses the hell out of me to be quite honest. I think that if there were an elite talent in this draft in terms of a skill position it would be a lot easier for everybody to stop reaching for players that prior to the start of the season were considered long shot first rounders.

Cam Newton has more red flags than Soviet Russia and still somehow he's in consideration for the 1st overall. Same with Blaine the Street Magician. It fits because he's an illusionist too.

Just say no to a QB at the top of the draft this year. PP7 is the best player at his position of anybody in this draft and I stick by that. He'll be the next CB in the line of Champ Bailey and Charles Woodson. He's the best available to me.

Honestly Vagrant. What in the grand scheme of things had he done?? I mean I get Vick. He killed dogs. I get that.

But what did Cam do to be considered a thug? Was he gangbanging?? Getting in fights?? Carrying guns??

Oh wait, he bought a stolen lap top, ,may have cheated on a paper, and may have particated in a pay for play agreement.

Is that a thug? Character questions? Absolutely. But when I was 21 I was a college athlete that had a worse rap sheet than Cam Newton and no one would ever consider me a thug. That little rant was petty and stupid. If that is how you view the world than please, please, please pass in your fan card.

Who brought up race by the way? You did...so u must be against black QBs

I brought up race because it's necessary at this point to attempt to justify your opinion of Cam Newton while rebuking the idea of race being a factor, sadly enough, or else that is the first place people that discredit your opinion will attack you from. If anything, I think that race is one of the biggest positives that Cam Newton has going for him right now because it has made him virtually untouchable in the criticism department in the last few weeks. It got pretty wild prior to that, as it should have considering his behavior, but at THIS point in time? Nobody is saying anything about Cam Newton and extensive character issues because they've just seen a fellow journalist burned in effigy for expressing his opinions about it. Nobody wants to fall on that sword.

Is it safe to say that us drafting a QB in the 1st round, specifically Cam Newton, bothers you so much more than us going 2-14 last season and being totally irrelevant to the NFL world?

How are you guys feeling after this tidal wave of Cam-to-the-Panthers news from the past week?

Pissed

Are you still in denial?

No

Are you angry?

Yes

Ready to get behind him?

Been ready for him to get behind us and fug us as we become NFCS basement dwellers

And if you've been pro-Cam for a while, how about you? Are you feeling as optimistic for the future as you have in a long time like I am?

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck no

I feel the same way after this past season that I felt after the 1-15 season and it's that if we've endured this embarrassment, we had damn well get a PLAYER with the draft pick that we pick up in order to turn this whole thing around. We did that time when we picked up Julius Peppers and we had a rapid climb to relevancy after that. My fear is that taking a QB at the top of THIS draft is an absolute reach no matter how its done and who is taken.

I think that other players than Gabbert and Newton have something to offer us next year and are available. I think we turn around quicker by picking up a veteran QB and going BPA at draft time.

I know this was kind of an indirect way of asking me if I would rather see us lose another 2-14 season or win with Cam, but if winning with Cam was a certainty then how could anybody say no? The idea of drafting a QB based on the false assumption that, "why not? things couldn't possibly get worse", is not true to me. Things can get a WHOLE lot worse if we waste a 1st overall on a guy that seems to care more about his image than his future team and a fraudulent combine hero like Gabbert.

Cam is a thug right?? Peterson scored a 9 on his wonderlic, has been accused of a pay for play, scheme himself, part of his denial has already been proven to be a lie, and he was such a head case in high school that Urban Meyer refused to offer him a scholarship. Urban Meyer. Who had something like 20% of his players with criminal records thought that PP was to immature to be offered a scholarship!!!

Come on buddy. If you are going to ride a high horse and serve out judgments just do it evenly.

I love PP also and he is second on my want list so I don't have an axe to grind with the guy.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
