Another LaFell/Gettis thread

You can throw Edwards in here too.

Smitty is almost a typical WR as far as his attitude goes. He wants the ball all the time, he can be a showboat, and he isn't always the prototype of a team player. And we all know (and are generally sick of) how other star WRs around the league behave. Most are obnoxious, self-centered, and really arrogant.

Meanwhile, in Carolina, neither LaFell nor Gettis come across that way. Both are humble, both are team-oriented, both say the right things when asked, and I can't remember either demanding the ball last year. Is this because the locker room doesn't have room for another personality at WR so long as Smith is on the roster, or do we just have a couple oddballs?

How often does a WR that isn't drafted in the first round ever demand the ball their rookie year?

I also think it was because they also had a hard time even getting the ball thrown in the air to them. But if they are both that way and they boom into amazing WR's, then we are very very lucky.

Once they get to a point where there will be expectations, even to the extent of much more money for achieving these expectations I suspect LaFell and/or Gettis will want the ball much more. They were both rookies, the rookies are concentrating on not fuging up more so than getting their numbers called.

IMO, the 3 best WRs in the NFL are Andre, Calvin, and Fitz....none of which are divas like a Smitty.

I don't see Smitty ever changing.......I loved his days as a one man wrecking crew but he isn't that caliber WR anymore. While still gifted and a beast.....his act is growing old. I mean I dislike Clausen as much as the next hater but seeing Smitty chew the poor guy out was just lame.

Guest The Cat

Jerry Rice was that way. Catch a TD, hand the ball too the ref as if he's been there before and he'll be back again soon. No big whoop.

A J Green is like that as well.

How do you reconcile that with Smith's own words?

“Well the thing is, everybody keeps saying a compliment receiver to complement me . . . I don’t want anyone to complement me. I’m turning 31 years old, people can say I’m losing speed,.... I would like a younger guy to come in and eventually take my spot. I don’t want to be a #1 anymore.”

“I don’t want to be a guy who can’t let go of something he’s got to let go. I would like to be a guy that can play in the slot all day, and I would like some of these young guys to start

doing some of the out routes like I was doing for Moose and Ricky when I was fresh legged and when I didn’t know what I was doing, and really start to develop and start handing over the torch.”

Actions speak louder. :)

And yeah, he's calmed down a little as he's aged. But you would be hard pressed to deny his diva status when he was in his prime.

Yeah, I'm not sure what I think about him. He seems to have been allowed to bully and intimidate under the past staff. Maybe the new one will have a different take on that. Gantt seems to make hints at things about Smith but wont come out and say anything. The local writers must be intimidated as well. They will come out in a year or two after he's gone and spill the beans about something. It would be nice to know those thins when the are freaking relevant.

    • Smith-Wade for me. He has the path to some decent hefty snaps in Evero’s scheme. He held his own last year and improved as he continued to get snaps— If he makes some strides, could be a very capable nickel.  I agree with Sanders. Bryce had some trust in him that final Falcons game post crazy head-stand.  Bryce looked for him a lot that final game and made some critical catches to get us the W. Seems he’s put in major work so I’m hopeful about him.  Wallace will have an offseason under his belt. I like him a lot, was higher graded than most remember in his draft (I.e Brugler had him LB3/70 overall) but he isn’t as cerebral of an LB as we’re used to. I think he could thrive if we get D captain/film-junky type next to him— because right now that’s Jewell.  Still a bit cautious but love the talent. Rozeboom may snag some playing time from him if he’s still working out the kinks.
    • Didnt Canales already say starters are playing in the pre season? either way extra reps dont hurt but im not one of those people that think playing in the pre season would have saved Bryce from an awful start.
