Peter King: Panthers doing homework on Newton

I talked to Carolina GM Marty Hurney the other day, and though he didn't give me a clue about who the Panthers plan to pick with the first overall choice ("We've got time,'' Hurney said, "and maybe our list changes before the first round begins''), it's beginning to look a lot like Newton. More and more, the Panthers seem to be getting comfortable with the idea of choosing a player with only 284 major-college passes ... in some part because of the year he spent righting his football and personal life at a junior college, Blinn, 45 minutes outside Houston.

And the same old threads keep being made.

Anyone speculates that the Panthers are taking Newton......a dozen Cam Nut Huggers piss themselves trying to make a new thread.

It was only a while back that King was saying Cam wouldn't be the pick because JR wouldn't like him. Seems pretty telling to me. And for the record I'm on the fence about Cam ;)

And in other news, The Panthers are doing their homework on MANY draft picks, even ones beyond who they take in the first round. But as previously reported, the Cam Nuthuggers see what they want to see in every mention of Cam and Carolina although it is all speculation at this point.

You know what would crack me up Hatter? If the panthers completely pass on him and when asked why they say 'Well we were concerned about some things so we investigated further, even further than other teams, and all that research did was confirm our concerns about him'. :D

Now on a serious note: If you have to go all the way back to Blinn Juco to further review the guy, he shouldn't be your pick. You remember all those kids on high school teams that have no business at all ever stepping on a D1, D2 or D3 field? Guess where they go to School and still play some ball? Nuff said

Why wouldn't they review his time at Blinn? You're considering taking a guy 1st overall you learn everything you can about him. And as far as high school players that don't belong, that may be true, but I'd say Cam was on a whole other level considering that he was even better at Auburn than he was at Blinn, went undefeated, and won a national title.

And all this 'they still believe in Clausen' talk... if they really believed in him they wouldn't even be considering a QB with this pick. They wouldn't have announced that they would take Luck if he entered the draft and likely tried to trade the pick, which would've been very valuable with Luck there.

Hurney may not want to give up on Clausen yet, but that's just because he's a recent 2nd round pick and Hurney doesn't want to admit his mistake. Besides, what do you expect him to say 'no, we think Jimmy is garbage and he will never step foot on the field in a Panther uniform again'? Of course Hurney's going to defend him.

"'A few times,'' he said, "I'd be sitting in my office late, watching tape, trying to figure out what we'd do in the game that week. He'd call and say, 'What are you doing? Can I come up and watch with you?' And he'd come up and we'd go over things. He just loved it. The best way I can say it with Cam about football is, he's just ate up with it.''"

And there are people who still question his work ethic. If a guy has this kind of work ethic and his obvious physical gifts you can overcome and fix a lot of his short comings. If he stays clean off the field we may have found our franchise QB (assuming all the signs are true).

I am not sure that anything King says is "telling".

he is another so-called expert who has absolutely no inside information from our ownership/coaching staff. He, like the others, are doing nothing but speculating and guessing at this point.

Are we looking at Cam as a possible pick? Absolutely.

Is the speculation by any of these experts "telling evidence" of anything? Absolutely not.

I still honestly believe there are 3-4 guys that have big time chances of being our picks if we stay at #1.

Dareus, Cam, Gabbert....yes.

PP and Green....very outside chance.

Did any publication get an actual quote from JR saying he wasn't sold on Newton or was that media speculation? I never saw one. Most likely just trying to sell or bring attention to there publication. I wouldn't be surprised if he did but most people that meet Newton usually change there minds about his character. Maybe thats because he is just plain likable.

    • Ehlers needs to sit. Definitely can't lose him to a meaningless game.
    • Bet didn't hit because the referee missed 3 clear corner kicks. I had a 5k parlay that would have been alive tomorrow if he didn't miss those calls as well. Super annoying
    • I don't think it's at all a given that we have players who are good at driving the basket. I guess that depends on your definition. Bridges is 43rd in attempts in the paint Miller is 64th and LaMelo is 66th. We all love to see the lob threat but it's largely miniscule at this point in time. There's gotta be a solution here if LaMelo is to be the centerpiece because this is simply not sustainable if we want to continue to ascend. If he can't drive to the basket then that means we need to add another player to the core who consistently can. That would require moving someone like Miles Bridges. And that's certainly not going to be popular with LaMelo but something has to give here for what we are investing and we need to maximize guys like Miller and Knueppel on rookie deals while we still can. The three chucking is fine when it's working where the issue comes into play is there are no adjustments when it isn't and we just go into a shell and begin to look like the Hornets of yesteryear. That's why the offensive evolution of all involved is critical to us taking the next step. Getting to the play in is nice but we should have our sights set much higher. Right now though they need to take care of business against the Heat. All I ask is that they at least beat those fools. I cannot stand the Heat.
