Volek not likely an option

So what is your option at QB after the stop gap? Another stop gap?

*IF* the Panthers aren't 100% sold on Gabbert or Newton or whoever, then look for that player next year. I don't want the team to decide that since we have the #1 pick we HAVE to get a QB here, that's all.

IF the Panthers are sold, of course they take that QB.

And if we draft 4th or lower and the the first 3 guys off the board are Luck, Barkley, and Jones do we wait another year?

... it would be unprecedented for all 3 to go off the board that quick. We have no idea how we will do with or without Cam Newton; trying to predict that kind of thing is pointless. What if Newton sucks and we're in position to draft Luck?? Meh.

Ya we just bomb another year to get andrew luck. Great plan guyzz

No. As many teams have shown lately, you can win in the NFL without your QB being picked #1 overall.

next year it's very unlikely we select no.1 overall which would be where luck is picked if he maintains his status

if he doesn't that means he underachieved and didn't perform up to expectations, and that will be what people use to argue against drafting him, and if you can do that, you can pretty much create an argument against drafting any QB in that draft too

"but man we can't pick him because that one game he played against Oregon and it's just too risky man"

I don't think a QB needs to be Luck to go #1 overall and I don't think we need Luck there in order to pull the trigger on drafting a Qb. If the Panthers are sold on Newton obviously they pull the trigger, but if they aren't, they should feel like they NEED to draft a QB at #1, because there are other drafts in the future we can get a QB they may feel more comfortable taking where we are picking.

True. But you can't win without a franchise guy either

I know. But, you can get that guy later in the draft. You don't need to pick #1 to get him.

This #1 pick thing next year is WISHFUL thinking, we don't know what order the draft will be next year if there is no Football.

So, stop with the Luck BS.

Nobody is suggesting we try to get #1 next year to pick Luck.

Why do you guys assume you need to be picking #1 to get a decent QB??

Some drafts just don't have good QB prospects. if the Panthers share that feeling, I don't want them to massively reach JUST because we need a QB. As I've said, if they believe that a QB in this draft will be big in the league then take him. I just worry that a lot of people are thinking just because we draft a QB, any QB as long as it's at #1, we'll be in luck. I just... don't see it that way.

Pretty much.

They are allowed to trade up. Plus there will be other veteran and trade options. And it's not like franchise QBs are only ever drafted at #1.

Guys act like if we don't draft a QB this year, we'll never ever have another chance at a franchise QB ever again :nonod:

    • overall agree on the draft grade as a whole on on each pick, but every time I read (and I have read it more than once) that we "gave up two firsts" for Bryce, I am confused. We gave up the 2024 first, but we swapped 2023 firsts, so we didn't give up anything there. We did give up our former first rounder in DJ, but I don't think thats what you mean as one of the "firsts" we gave up.
    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
