Cam will start in 2011 if drafted

It depends how quickly he makes the transition. Rivera isn't going to let him get thrown out there if he isn't ready. It also depends on who Clausen/moore/whoever does when they start.

if we're in playoff contention, he's not going to bench whoever it is for Newton... He'll keep letting him learn on the sidelines.

On the other hand, if he feels he's ready and at mid season thinks aren't looking promising, I think we'll all get a chance to taste the Cammy Cam Juice.

Agree 100%...

The whole we need a vet to mentor stuff is bullpoo IMO. Not only do they not mentor but vets still think they should be starters.

You would be pissed if your employer came to you and said, "Hey train this guy for a year so we can fire you please"

That is essentially what happened when Stewart was drafted over Deangelo's head. You are right though. QB's are different all-together.Some guys like Mcnabb, Leinart, Matt Hasselbeck, etc. still want to be starters, so you have a point there. But guys like Leftwich, Pennington, Sage Rosenfel, Etc., you let them know from the jump what the deal is before you bring them in, and they will play the role. But yea, the whole mentoring thing is bullshit. Basically it is buying time until the prospect is ready. Mentor is just a word the front office and media like to use for whatever reason. It is just buying time. Shula and Chud are the mentors. Not some damn vet.

They gave Moore a high tender last year, one that carried with it a 3 million dollar salary. League rules require that the tender offer they give him this year includes a raise in pay.

I have a hard time seeing that as a technicality.

I expect at the very least, he will go to training camp. And to hear Hurney talk about him, you get the idea they haven't soured that much on him.

this ain't last year...totally different scenario.

So you think they go into camp with Moore, Clausen, Pike, and Null? I find that hard to believe as realistic w/ a new staff who is likely to draft Cam #1 overall.

Look find me a 1st round QB who didn't have at least a 5+ yr vet aiding him on a roster

then why do teams who draft 1st round picks always make sure a vet is on their roster when they make a move for a 1st round QB?

I think we should go into camp with Moore, Clausen Pike, and a veteran.

We could go into camp with Moore, Clausen, Pike and a draft pick, but I don't like that option (too much youth).

I think Null has a contract largely just in case Moore signs elsewhere; which I don't see likely, but they have to plan for all scenarios.

so you basically wanna go with the exact same group of QB's that got us in this position...brilliant!!!

unless we are trading for palmer there are not even upgrades in the FA market over moore.

Pretty sure only one of them actually starts at a time :sosp:

Reality Check: The chances of Clausen not being on roster this season are practically nil. I also don't see us going to camp with Moore and Pike only to dump both. That leaves one new spot to go either to a veteran or a draft pick. I'd prefer a vet.

Garrard could be available by trade too. So could Alex Smith. He was better with Norv Turner guiding him, and our offensive staff is pretty much all Turner disciples.

I answered that in my post. It is moreso about buying time than it is about having the vet actually do the mentoring. If the qb is a class act, ie how Jake Dellhomme was with Colt Mccoy, then it's all gravy. That is the exception more than the rule. When Stafford was drafted, Culpepper didn't want to have anything to do with mentoring him. He was in it for himself. Same goes for Brett Farve. He wasn't mentoring Rodgers. The coaches were mentoring and training him. Mcnabb didn't mentor Kolb. Teams bring in a veteran for their onfield experience and to help win games until the prospect is ready. So to answer your question, teams make sure a solid veteran qb is on the roster because they want a chance to win games. In the end, that is what all this is about.
