How Rookie Pay Proposal will Affect Draft (Panthers)

Recommended Posts

I agree it is likely to happen in one form or another, but it is far from a sure thing.

In a negotiation, any outcome is possible. If the owners get 80% of what they want, but it doesn't include a rookie reduction, they may opt to sign.

You just never know until it's a done deal.

The owners are not the only ones that want a rookie wage scale/reduction, the veteran players do not want a rookie that has never played a down and is not worth the money coming in and getting a 30 million dollar plus signing bonus (see Jamarcus Russell).

The Rookie Wage Scale will happen, and the Panthers will be in a much better position than if they drafted last year at number one and gave a rookie 50 million guaranteed.

I do think an issue might be if the contracts are shorter and whoever we pick decides to go to a big market team instead of stay with the Panthers.

And I think you are probably right. It's just the old not counting the chickens thing.

The biggest reason for Marty's trades was the fact that we were a middle tier team always trying to move up to get a good pick a good value. This is different we don't have to wait for scraps anymore, we get to pick who we want. If we need a certain player I don't think Marty will feel the need to wheel and deal. Sometimes it just is what it is.

The fact that this first pick becomes less of a risk for us means we can now use it without hesitation.

Many people on here are not assessing the value of the pick. Heck, we can get a second and a first rounder next year by dropping 4-5 spots.

Here is a scenario:

Cam Newton, QB

vs.

Patrick Peterson, CB

Stephen Paea, DT

Landry Jones, QB (2012)

Considering 2011 might be abbreviated, probably not stupid to trade.

My thinking exactly, but it may look more like this:

Patrick Peterson, CB

Kenrick Ellis, DT / Stephen Paea, DT

Andrew Luck, QB

Justin Blackmon, WR

That is in the case of a lackout. Imagine that scenario.

Without a lockout, our picks would probably look more like:

Tyler Wilson, QB / Jerrel Worthy, DT

Michael Floyd, WR / Justin Blackmon, WR

I think you have to draft this year under the assumption that there will be no rookie salary cap, which means Cam could be in line for a HUGE payday.

That is exactly correct. If the courts end the lockout and make the two sides play under the 2010 parameters, whoever is at 1 is in line for a big payday.

Should the courts end the lockout, all we can hope is that a CBA gets done with a rookie scale before we have to sign our 1st pick.

But right now, GM's cannot assume there will be a cap this year.

Terrible year to have the first pick. I think you have to look at the next two drafts and lump them together. We have 2 qbs who need a chance (I know, some of you experts have determined them to be busts so there is no way we should give them a chance) to show us what they can do in normal situation. QB is arguably, potentially better next season. Here is what I would do:

1. Trade down and get the best CB in the draft and 2 DTs who fit the system.

2. Get a WR early in the event Edwards busts and SS leaves.

3. Build OL depth (Gross, wharton over 31, Kalil on a 1-year deal, Otah's knees)

4. Remember that first rounder we got for trading down and getting Peterson? If we need it, use it to trade up into the top of the 2012 draft. Not many 2-14 teams would turn down two first rounders (imagine if we were offered the #8 and the #12 picks in the draft--all over it). Grab Luck or Jones, the two top prospects in 2012.

Even if we take Newton now, he will still need a year--even if the CBA is resolved tomorrow. Build the support, then bring in the stud QB--if you need one. It is stupid not to lump both years together.

I realize this post was long and that creates a sense of isolation and abandonment for some of you who only comprehend fortune cookie posts. I am sorry. OMG! BFF? LOL!

The owners will not sign rookies under the old CBA. It's not gona happen.
