Redskins "trying like crazy' to trade up for a QB

If a trade of that type was to go down. It will have to be for a first next year and a second this year. They will be skipping 9 teams to get to number 1. But will the panthers take that Deal I believe they really would but it will have to be for a first next year and a second this year. Also quick question if you make a trade do you get the other team overall pick for the year? That will be the only way i trade out that number 1 spot.

Big board at 10 for us

1. Julio Jones

2. Prince Amukamara

3. Maybe Fairley

they are more likely to trade with denver

One thing to point out. The point that Gabbert is the target is purely the writer's speculation. He might not be their guy.

But on the assumption that it is him, if I'm Marty Hurney and Ron Rivera I'd start taking about Gabbert like the sun rises and sets on him.

The pick is worth whatever we decide it is worth to us. Those charts objectively mean poo. If we truly believe that there is some major talent in the 2nd round, it may only be worth adding a high second. If we really believe Cam (or anyone else for that matter) is going to be an all star, then it could be worth 10 first round picks.

Yep. Fans use that chart a lot, but teams aren't slaves to it (some likely don't give a flying rip about it).

Yup, they should contact Gabbert's agent to start discussing potential contract terms and then leak it.

That's a bit rich. If they go for it sure, but it would most likely be packaged where the Skins get to keep their first rounder next year.

Actually it isn't to traade up 10 spots at the top of the draft. That is why teams wanting to trade at the top of the first rarely try and trade up more than 4 or 5 spots. It is too costly to jump higher.

Florio comments, and the last line is fairly interesting (link)

Well, they don’t have a third- or fourth-round pick to offer. There was also a rumor the Redskins were trying to trade down earlier in the week, which means Washington is achieving some level of misdirection success.

The rumor that the Redskins want to trade up passes the smell test. Mike Shanahan needs a young franchise quarterback to mold, and Jake Locker would be a reach at No. 10. (Although we think it’s a reach the Redskins would strongly consider.)

Washington isn’t afraid to be aggressive when they are a little desperate, and it’s safe to say their quarterback situation is desperate right now.

Keep in mind next year picks currently have zero value. May not be a draft next year, so unless the CBA gets done there's no possible way we trade with a team that high. Hurney might like to gamble but he's not stupid.

I don't think anybody on the owners side takes the notion of there being no draft next year seriously.

They have the "at your own risk" disclaimer, but I still won't be surprised if someone accepts a future pick in trade (may or may not be us).

They have no 3rd or 4th this year as pointed out above. So we would be looking at their 2nd, and presumably something in 2012, which isn't even guaranteed.

Unless the Panthers think all of the top choices suck, they would be fools to make that kind of deal.

Edit: Pantherfan beat me to it! Great minds think alike!

    • He should've been more than a JAG, but Jeremy Chinn.  I was convinced he was our next defensive star
    • I see what you did there
    • Yeah the only way current set up is fun is if every year a different tiny school builds a super team and makes a run. You just need 1 rich guy to say you know what would be funny, if I drop 30 million and my school has a shot at a national championship.   They won't ever do it but put some sort of tiered salary cap in place and sign them to 4 year deals. You can only transfer up or down tiers no lateral moves because mean ole coach at texas doesn't play me enough so I'm going to Tennessee. So a player at prairie view can transfer to texas and get paid more or a player from UNC can transfer to UNCG because he isn't getting playing time. If a guy is transferring "up" he can get a salary bump if the team has salary cap space. A guy transferring down has to stay at the same salary as he signed his 4 year deal for so the lower tier team would have to have the cap space to sign him. It would stop the money chasing for lateral moves but allow guys who improve massively at lower schools to make more money as juniors and seniors and hopefully keep more guys in one place because the contract is for 4 years.
