Yas on Smoke Screen: "Marty Hurney...doesn’t have time for games"

Joe Fortenbaugh writes that the Carolina Panthers might be setting up a smoke screen as just about every draft guru has them taking Auburn quarterback Cam Newton with the No. 1 overall pick. You always have to wonder about teams playing games at this time of year, and it’s possible the Panthers are trying to entice another team to trade up and get Newton. But there are two reasons why I don’t think this is the case on this one. First, it’s going to be very difficult to find any team willing to trade up to No. 1. Second, Carolina general manager Marty Hurney is a no-frills guy, who doesn’t have time for games. I can assure you, Hurney is not calling up select media members and saying “Do me a favor. Write a story that we’re going to take Newton and maybe that will convince some other team to want to trade up’’.

Interesting take. Still think Hurney would consider trade, but only for high qty of 11' picks.

Hurney is a genius that can orchestrate a nationwide smokescreen and keep it going indefinitely. All this while also being #1 when it comes to evaluating talent and doing in depth background searches on all the prospects.

He's a mastermind. We should be lucky he's only a GM and has no plans for world domination.

Hurney paid Yas to write that..

Or, did he set up a smoke screen by making us all think that he paid Yas to write a report on not setting up smoke screens, when in fact, Hurney never actually talked to Yas.

We've all be Inception'd.

    • Been here since the Coliseum days. Hornets were the first pro team I ever rooted for. If they're ever going to get out of the gutter they have to establish a culture. They are trying to do that. I have no idea if it will be successful but it's a start.
    • I don’t think I'd go that far but there is definitely legitimate reason to ask how much he actually values winning and being great as a basketball player. He is very easily distracted with off the court stuff. This has been a public criticism of people like LeBron James with some of the newer generations of "stars". And it is 1000% valid and needed to be said. All I can say is I hope this is the year. If it is it will be apparent fairly early on. But I get the sense if the same themes continue as the upcoming season progresses the FO could look to move him before the trade deadline. It would suck for a multitude of reasons and I don't want to see it happen but if it did it would be on LaMelo and LaMelo alone because they've given him the keys and are finally putting pieces around him. If he wants to be a great basketball player and win he will be here and do what is necessary for the team to be successful. If not well....
    • Haha.  I remember my first Hornets season.
