Why is that?? Whoever we draft is going to be the face of the franchise' date=' doing work in the community, guest appearances at elementary, middle and high schools, commercials and is going to be all over t.v. in the area. Do you really want a guy going to a school to talk to 10 and 11 year olds and throwing out a metaphor about a weapon. Once again, I don't think the gun metaphor makes him a thug I just think wrong place wrong time. He wants to say that in private in the locker room or to his friends when he's out by all means go ahead but not on a public forum.....[/quote']

Hire an image consultant, problem solved.

I think we would like to discover that his mental chamber is full of Xs and Os, not bullets.

And I quote:

“Call something at Auburn that’s a little verbal,” Gruden said, obviously knowing the answer to the question. “What would be a little verbal? Any recollection on that?

Newton: “Um.”

“Gimme something,” Gruden said. “What’s an Auburn play sound like?”

“I mean, you’re putting me on the — on the spot,” Newton said.

The gun analogy didn't really bother me.

The lack of response to the questions about offensive complexity though? That raised the old eyebrow :sosp:

Gruden already knew the plays at Auburn weren't complex. That was just ESPN throwing their usual poo on Newton and his intelligence. There's was no reason to even bring it up and that's why he smiled with his head down and said "putting me on the spot..". He's going to be going to practice and film study not some college course. Once he starts learning and studying everyday he's going to get better and more comfortable with the offense. There's been a few guys that were not that book smart such as Marino and Bradshaw that were pretty successful in the NFL. We have to wait until he actually gets into the NFL to determine whether or not he can adjust to the pro game.

He didn't ask him how complex the offense was, he asked him for a complex play call in the huddle, but Newton didn't huddle and call the plays, like most other college spread QB's. He still had to know what to do when he got 36 from the sidelines...he just didn't have to verbalize it on the field.

Consider this, he comes to the NFL a clean slate on how to call plays; no college terms and phrases that might he might mess up with translating it to the pro level.

Really would it even matter if he learned some verbage in college? considering that the verbage used in the NFL changes from coach to coach..it isn't going to matter what phrases he could of learned in college it's all irrelevant when they come to the pros.

Clausen was suppose to know how to run our offense coming out, verbage and all..and it didn't seem like that was true at all was it.

Do you know that he wouldn't?? It works both ways. I have no problem with him being the pick or being the face of the franchise if the FO has done their due diligence' date=' I just don't want him saying poo like that on a public forum. It paints our franchise in a bad light....[/quote']

it does but to assume some one will say that in front of kids is a far stretch. after he is drafted he will get coached up on ways to answer questions by the team that drafts him.

but it no way points our franchise in a bad light, thats extreme chief.

Gruden asked for ONE DAMN play....and Cam could not even articulate that.

Why? Becasue he did not read defenses at Auburn....he did not call any plays....he did not have to go through progressions.

The coach told him to look for one receiver and then take off running if he was open.

Yet, you simpletons believe that he is anywhere near ready to be an NFL QB.

He is a project plain and simple....and that is NOT what you spend a #1 pick on.

He is proving to be what many thought....another "athlete" playing QB that does not appear to have the mental capacity to digest and execute a complex NFL offense.

if the coach told him to do that how do you know he does not have the mental capacity to execute an offense? or are you basing your assumptions from a 3 minute clip.

"Putting him on the spot" was exactly what Gruden was aiming for.

The "spot" these guys are going to be in when they get to the NFL is pretty unforgiving, way more so than a short ESPN segment.

For that reason, I have no real problem with Gruden being a little rough on these prospects.
