And now, the flipside (Newton)...

There's a Newton cover story too (link)

"I'm trying to be the best player that I can be," Newton said.

Only time will tell if Newton's best will be good enough on the NFL level. It certainly was in college.

His scintillating season at Auburn included an SEC-record 30 passing touchdowns and a school-record 20 rushing touchdowns at the school that produced running backs Bo Jackson and James Brooks. He threw just seven interceptions and didn't lose a single fumble.

It's all driven by the kind of competitive streak that has served many an NFL superstar well, and it shows up in how he's handled the multitude of personal successes and failures that have played out in the national spotlight.

"I'm a competitor. That's what I do. For anybody who knows me, they know I like to compete," Newton said. "What I did in the past is in the past. I'm all about the future. I'm trying to prepare today to make my future as best as it can be.

"I'm a confident person. It was instilled in me at a young age to believe in myself first and foremost. Because if I don't believe in myself, who do I expect to believe in me?"

Seemingly few people believed in Newton a little more than a year ago - and many football followers hadn't even heard of him – yet here he is now, on the precipice of a life-changing event that football fans everywhere will witness.

"For me, it's been extremely exciting," he said. "This whole path to where I am right now has been something of a whirlwind to say the least, but at the same time this is what I signed up for.

"I'm blessed. I can't even say that enough. To know 365 days ago I was attending class at Auburn and even the Auburn fans didn't even know what they were getting at this time last year. It's a wonder what God can do in a person's life - this fast."

No cutesy title to this one, though.

So same question? Omen or no omen?

(the other side of the story here)

Wonder if we'll have a Mallett story too.

I honestly think that the pick is going to be either Newton or Gabbert. I don't think that that either of those are the right pick, (I believe we should take Marcell Dareus, especially since he's shown he's more reliable than Nick Fairley) but I believe that we are going to take one of those two QBs.

and didn't we already profiled Mallet a while back? I could be wrong

Sort of. He was the featured pic for the general draft preview for the quarterback position. If they had a profile of him specifically, I missed it.

(quick look at the media archives doesn't show one)

There was a profile of Dareus (Dareus dares to be great) and one of Green (Green could catch on in a big way). They also looked at Robert Quinn, who we're not said to be considering.

Newton shows 10 times more confidence and charisma than Clausen, that is for sure.

I predict us drafting Newton, and starting him after the first half of the season. We may win 1-4 games with Clausen or Moore, and another 1-3 games with Newton.

    • Yeah the only way current set up is fun is if every year a different tiny school builds a super team and makes a run. You just need 1 rich guy to say you know what would be funny, if I drop 30 million and my school has a shot at a national championship.   They won't ever do it but put some sort of tiered salary cap in place and sign them to 4 year deals. You can only transfer up or down tiers no lateral moves because mean ole coach at texas doesn't play me enough so I'm going to Tennessee. So a player at prairie view can transfer to texas and get paid more or a player from UNC can transfer to UNCG because he isn't getting playing time. If a guy is transferring "up" he can get a salary bump if the team has salary cap space. A guy transferring down has to stay at the same salary as he signed his 4 year deal for so the lower tier team would have to have the cap space to sign him. It would stop the money chasing for lateral moves but allow guys who improve massively at lower schools to make more money as juniors and seniors and hopefully keep more guys in one place because the contract is for 4 years.
    • Bryce youngs first starts for 3 years   51 of 103 49%     153 yards avg 6 ints 2 tds   But this is the year he turns it around
    • His third year was worse than Bryce's third year, significantly so.  And he had a game where he threw for 120 yards, two inteceptions, and had a fumble.  He had multiple games where he threw for more int's than td's.
