Kaepernick more athletic than Newton?

Interesting read.

Chip Smith might be the only man who has spent considerable time personally working out Cam Newton and Colin Kaepernick -- and he believes the Nevada quarterback is a superior athlete when compared to Auburn's Heisman Trophy winner.

"Of the 56 quarterbacks I've worked with, Colin is the most prepared for the NFL," Smith said. "I've never seen the kind of complete package like Colin Kaepernick has."

"I think Colin is game-ready to step in and play," Smith said. "He has the physical package, and the arm and he's very intelligent. He understands the mental aspect of it."

It's very possible, but Kaepernick just looks so frail, and I don't know if he has a bigger arm, plus his delivery is funky. I like his game, but I don't see how he is head and shoulders above Cam... Didn't Kaepernick come from a spread as well? So, I don't know what advantage he has, but I supposed it's possible.

This just sounds like someone who decided to give a guy some support in the press being that Cam has gotten so much more attention thus far, he's just doing his part to keep Kaepernick in the conversation as far as being a 1st rounder... I don't blame him.

I think in a more stable year teams would be willing to make Newton, Gabbert, Kaepernick, Locker, and maybe even Ponder or Stanzi a gamble pick in the first round...

With so much ado about the CBA and a semi-uncertain future, teams are more than likely going to be extremely conservative with their picks... especially teams picking towards the end of each round...

title is a bit misleading....

ultimately I think he is just saying Kaepernick is the most pro ready and better QB.

He used the word athlete which created the confusion. I don't think this guy would argue Kapernick is more athletic.

Eeeeeehhhh, no.

Chip Smith might be the only man who has spent considerable time personally working out Cam Newton and Colin Kaepernick -- and he believes the Nevada quarterback is a superior athlete when compared to Auburn's Heisman Trophy winner.

"They're a lot alike in terms of being really special, and they're both extremely athletic," said Smith, founder of Duluth, Ga.-based Competitive Edge Sports. "But Colin is actually a little bit better athletically. He's a little faster -- I've clocked him as low as a 4.4 (-second runner in the 40-yard dash) -- and there isn't a quarterback in this draft who throws the ball with the velocity that Colin does. Colin is a better athlete, and he understands the game better."

That's high praise from a man who has trained elite football players for 20 years. Smith also has long ties to Newton's family and worked with the quarterback after he left the University of Florida in 2008 and was looking at other schools.

I'd say the title is on target.

well maybe so......but just b/c this one guy claiming it doesn't make it reality. Cam imo is clearly more atheltic......just look at everything the two did in the combine that would measure an individuals athleticism. Of course, non of that has to do with good QB play.....as Gruden pointed out to Cam despite being amazed by his vertical, broad jump, playing WR, running over people at goal etc.

    • I mean I'd like to add a monster TE as much as anyone else but ultimately what use will that serve with a QB who had 54 passing yards in 4 quarters at one point last season? Defense defense defense.
    • Personally I think he's a nightmare to cover I think linebackers generally aren't fast enough to keep up with him in coverage and cornerbacks don't have the strength to tackle him one-on-one in physically bring them down which would normally lead to a broken tackle or a nasty stiff arm or just bully ball play sure you could find a receiver with comparable speed like Cooper but he's faster than Cooper sure you can find a wide receiver that is the same size but he's probably More powerful than them and a better blocker.  The size speed athleticism package that he is in is completely unique it's easier to say I'd rather have just a big blocker because we've never seen this type of profile before I'm a risk taker I think you would be God blessed if this was there at 19 I think if you can get a guy that's a tight end who immediately becomes the fastest guy on your offense and at the same time that third wide receiver that can stretch and burn defenses over the top that's the perfect what the Panthers need type weapon.
    • I think you're under selling Sadiq. They are two different players in terms of how they win. Loveland is 2 inches taller maybe 5-6 pounds heavier. Comparing his speed to sadiq.. well your comparing a 4.7 guy to a 4.3 guy I'm seeing a guy that can take a bubble screen from the tight end position and turn it into a house call. I'm not saying the guy is a certified home run pick but I don't think there's really a president's for a comparison for this kind of athlete. It's easy to say this doesn't look like Warren or Loveland because we haven't seen guys that fit this profile The closest you might be able to get is Vernon Davis.  He's not as sure far as those guys were but at 19 I think almost everybody is going to have some warts and he's a lottery ticket of could be top 10 in the draft player or could fail I am more of a risk taker I think he fits the athletic profile that could be a homerun, like I said he's almost 40 lb bigger than Cooper and like 4-5 in taller than Cooper so and he's faster. So whatever you think Cooper gives you I think he does that and more. If you want to go with one of the office alignment I can understand that as well but for value as a receiving threat I don't think there's a bigger value at number 19.
