Add Peter King To The Newton To Carolina Hype Train

In Sports Illustrated's draft preview -- on newsstands Wednesday -- senior writer Peter King predicts Newton will be the first name Goodell calls April 28 in New York.

In the SI online version, King supports the Panthers' choice of Newton, who has been criticized for character issues and his ability to handle an NFL offense after starring one season in Auburn's spread.

"Touchdowns scored in the NFC South last year: Atlanta 47, New Orleans 44, Tampa Bay 39 ... Carolina 17," King writes. "While you may not want to blame Jimmy Clausen for being in the wrong place at the wrong time as a rookie last year, you have to be skeptical of him after the Panthers' offensive meltdown.

"Hard to pass on a player with Newton's talent, even if the supporting cast in Carolina may not give him the chance to show it right away."

so now the supporting cast of Williams, Stewart, Smitty, LaFell, Gettis, Kalis, Otah, Gross, etc.. will not allow "Newton to showcase his talent".

Sounds like people are already starting to make excuses for him.

Sounds like the lame excuses in Atlanta when Vick was there....saying he had no WR's. Yet, Ryan came in and lit it up with those same WR's.

I think that's more of an indicator that Peter King doesn't have a clue about football teams outside of Foxboro than an indictment on Cam.

Holy ridiculous leaps Batman!!!

All he said is our team sux, which is what the rest of the country thinks.

Are they wrong? probably but no guarantees

so now the supporting cast of:

Williams,

Might not be here.

Stewart

Solid

Smitty

Might not be here. Also is going to be 32 this year. Definitely is past his prime.

LaFell

Unproven. Might be great, might be bad. We don't know.

Gettis

Unproven. Might be great, might be bad. We don't know.

Kalis

??? You mean Kalil? Solid.

Otah

If we ever get him off IR.

Gross

Quite possibly may be on a downhill of his peak years of production.

, etc.. will not allow "Newton to showcase his talent".

So out of all the people you just listed, two are potentially not going to be panthers. Two are past their prime production. One is plagued with injury. Two are unproven rookies, who had bad numbers, entering their second year. And two are solid.

Yeah... I think we have some issues on Offense still. What we need is someone who can bring so much talent to the field, they will elevate their play.

Sounds like the lame excuses in Atlanta when Vick was there....saying he had no WR's. Yet, Ryan came in and lit it up with those same WR's.

Oh come on man... its WAY too early to be drawing comparisons like this. And we DO have some problems on Offense. Mostly our QB right now though. Which is why we are bringing in Newton.

Yeah, that's a pretty dim statement.

    • I mean I'd like to add a monster TE as much as anyone else but ultimately what use will that serve with a QB who had 54 passing yards in 4 quarters at one point last season? Defense defense defense.
    • Personally I think he's a nightmare to cover I think linebackers generally aren't fast enough to keep up with him in coverage and cornerbacks don't have the strength to tackle him one-on-one in physically bring them down which would normally lead to a broken tackle or a nasty stiff arm or just bully ball play sure you could find a receiver with comparable speed like Cooper but he's faster than Cooper sure you can find a wide receiver that is the same size but he's probably More powerful than them and a better blocker.  The size speed athleticism package that he is in is completely unique it's easier to say I'd rather have just a big blocker because we've never seen this type of profile before I'm a risk taker I think you would be God blessed if this was there at 19 I think if you can get a guy that's a tight end who immediately becomes the fastest guy on your offense and at the same time that third wide receiver that can stretch and burn defenses over the top that's the perfect what the Panthers need type weapon.
    • I think you're under selling Sadiq. They are two different players in terms of how they win. Loveland is 2 inches taller maybe 5-6 pounds heavier. Comparing his speed to sadiq.. well your comparing a 4.7 guy to a 4.3 guy I'm seeing a guy that can take a bubble screen from the tight end position and turn it into a house call. I'm not saying the guy is a certified home run pick but I don't think there's really a president's for a comparison for this kind of athlete. It's easy to say this doesn't look like Warren or Loveland because we haven't seen guys that fit this profile The closest you might be able to get is Vernon Davis.  He's not as sure far as those guys were but at 19 I think almost everybody is going to have some warts and he's a lottery ticket of could be top 10 in the draft player or could fail I am more of a risk taker I think he fits the athletic profile that could be a homerun, like I said he's almost 40 lb bigger than Cooper and like 4-5 in taller than Cooper so and he's faster. So whatever you think Cooper gives you I think he does that and more. If you want to go with one of the office alignment I can understand that as well but for value as a receiving threat I don't think there's a bigger value at number 19.
