I'm trying to get myself excited about taking Newton #1 overall

Actually I was able to use Jimmy pretty good in Madden because his short passing accuracy was pretty good. I just couldn't do play action or throw it deep with him.

That was last year's Madden though. I'm pretty sure good old JC rating is going to drop in the upcoming Madden. Think QB Jeff Lewis type rating. JC has taken a beating this off season in the media and by fans.

Cam is going to have that "new 1st pick in draft/high potential but no idea how to rate him" bonus on Madden. He'll probably be at least a 78 with 83 speed and high 80 elusiveness and agility.

I have trouble understanding why this team would even consider drafting Newton at #1.

He isn't even one of the top 10 rated players in the draft.

He has off the field issues.

His personality/attitude is questionable.

His football, and more particularly his QB IQ is questionable.

He comes from a spread offense.

He only started one year in college.

He isn't even the top rated QB in the draft.

His accuracy is questionable.

I've heard he doesn't fit in to the Panthers offensive system.

Too many questions.

To be fair... these are the pros...

Very mobile, good arm.

Playmaking abilities.

JC championship, NCAA championship with undefeated season. In a touch conference.

Has better mechanics than Vince Young or The Golden Calf of Bristol.

He will obviously sell jerseys.

He will sell tickets, apparently.

Here's a question...

Does drafting Newton make some of our players (Steve Smith and DWill) want to return to play for the Panthers?

Still not convinced we are taking Newton. We are going to try like hell to trade the pick. I would even take Buffalo's third rounder (67) and their fourth (101).

I don't think they are that desperate..maybe just some fans who don't want newton lol

I do not think drafting Newton means Smitty stays in fact I suspect the total opposite. Could encourage D-Will to because he did say he wanted to see a team commit to a QB, so if we draft Cam and look like we commit to him he may be more eager to stay.

I'll be honest with you. I don't think Smitty was the biggest Jake fan. Jake hardly ever threw an accurate pass. It was almost always thrown behind the WRs. It worked to his advantage on the sideline routes. But it hurt across the middle.

So first we had a month of bitchin from the cam detractors about how we shouldn't draft him. Now if we do, I guess we will have another month about how we are screwed and will never recover. Then months of bitchin if he sits the bench or plays and struggles.

Oh JOY!!!!

Too bad if he plays well in a year or two we surely won't be getting any apologies or admissions they were wrong.

    • Congratulations do they know who the father is?
    • In my opinion Fitterer was probably right about not paying McCaffrey. Now not wanting to "pay RBs" in my opinion isn't something you want to set in stone, to me it all comes down to the individual.
    • Maybe I'm just not understanding, but everywhere that I have read says that signing bonuses go against the cap prorated by as much as five years. The following example uses Andrew Luck's rookie contract as an example. "Take Andrew Luck, the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck signed a four-year contract with the Colts worth $22.1 million and included a $14.5 million signing bonus. Rather than a $14.5 million cap hit in 2012, the Colts spread out his signing bonus over the life of his contract. The hit against the cap would be $3.625 million per year over four years instead of a direct cap hit of $14.5 million directly in 2012. This gave the Colts more leverage and cap flexibility in signing other players." https://www.the33rdteam.com/nfl-signing-bonuses-explained/ I don't know why some of you think that signing bonuses aren't counted against the cap over the length of the contract, but whatever.   "The bonus with a signing is usually the most garish aspect of a rookie contract. Bonus is the immediate cash players receive when they ink a deal. It factors into the cap, but only for the whole contract duration, in terms of salary cap calculations. In the case of Bryce Young’s $24.6 million signing bonus, that’s prorated to approximately $6.15 million per season over a four-year deal. This format allows teams to handle the cap and provides rookies with some short-term fiscal stability, which is important given the high injury risk in this league." https://collegefootballnetwork.com/how-rookie-contracts-work-in-the-nfl/ I understand how signing bonuses can be a useful tool in order to manage the cap, and as one of the article suggests, signing bonuses may become important if you have a tight cap, but the bill is always going to come due. I'm not necessarily referring to you Tuka, but it seems to me that others simply don't want to understand that fact which is why they're reacting to what I'm saying negatively. How odd. In any event, I have a better general understanding of why signing bonuses are used now, and it's generally to fit salaries under the cap. Surely players, whether they be rookies or not, love a signing bonus because they get a good portion of their money up front. This in turn gives them more security and probably amounts to tax benefits as well. I also understand why teams would not want to use signing bonuses, particularly for players or draftees who have a higher probability of being gone before a contract even ends.
