Coach:Herman Edwards-Start Him Now!?

So I was watching SC this morning and they had McShay, and the Coach (Herman Edwards) on in the first segment discussing the fit of Cam with Carolina. And aside from everything we've already heard before, coach went on to say (not exact quote, but as close as I can remember) "if you draft Cam you have to start him right away".

That got me thinking about all of the pro/anti-Cam talk that seemingly has "The Huddle" split, personally I've been on the fence about him starting just due to lack of NFL experience etc., but I've also pondered the idea of him starting, and in situations where he's in trouble or a play breaks down he uses his ability to extend the play and turn something into nothing.

With it looking more and more evident that we'll draft Cam, do we sit him, or do we start him?

We start the best guy we have. When Newton is the best guy then we start him. Until then he sits and learns.

LOL...and that's the 64 thousand dollar question.

First overall is supposed to be a no brainer, Pro bowl potential, next season starting pick.

We're basically drafting a bigger faster and probably more individually-talented Jimmy Clausen while keeping everything else the same.

Name one offensive change that's being made...other than hoping Otah gets healthy. Heck...we don't even know what Chud has planned.

I'm being too cynical and I attribute it to crazy draft day. Damned shame I can't drink at work.

TBH I like Cam and hope we take him. But, I don't think he starts right away. Give him a few months to get his feet wet and then try to work him in after the bye. With the uncertanty of the lockout and OTA/training camp schedules I can't see him being ready week 1.

Edwards like others think we need to start him because we are going to suck anyway so what do we have to lose. I actually think we might be decent so I want whoever is going to help us do that. I am not convinced we are that bad or need to sacrifice this year. I am opptomistic that our defense will be good and our offense will at least be improved.

We don't "have to" start Cam right away, we should get a vet QB to start and let Cam redshirt.

Honestly, I feel like he has to sit for awhile, especially taking in consideration that we're likely going to have a completely screwed up training camp/pre-season. I just don't see a way he could possibly be ready to start in game one.

Part of my concern with starting him so quickly, as I have mentioned before, is the possibility of serious injury. As armchair head coach, I wouldn't dare send him in there to get massacred. If he's the franchise guy we want him to be, then I don't want to have to reattach his head or a limb that's been torn off by a rabid linebacker in game 3.

I don't mind him sitting but I would like to see him in some GL packages, my main concern/question is who will we be able to bring...I'm on the "wait and see" regarding that aspect.

Bring in Jake the mentor, lol. I've seen this seriously and jokingly mentioned before, the more I've thought about it the more I think his passion and grit at the least could rub off on the team, damn I must be losing it.

He will start there is no doubt. You cant take a player at number one and pay him a lot of money to sit on the bench. Why because he is your impact player and you not using him at all then you shouldnt have drafted him number one. You would have been better off getting somebody else who will start day one. I dont think he will start the first beginning of the season depending on trainning camp but by the Middle of the season he will start.

Cam reminds me of Pat White but bigger. Most of you know I wanted White here couple years ago. I also stated he needed 3 years to be a starter in the NFL. His main problems (besides being small) was reading defenses and running a simple game plan. Both are great avoiding getting away from defenders. I see Cam the same way but he will need atleast 2 years before he is ready to start.

You can't go into the season thinking about "redshirting" a QB.

Look at the situation Clausen was thrown into.

If the offensive line is sound and he knows the terminology and playbook, you might as well start him. We obviously don't like Clausen and I've heard a number of high draft picks (Palmer, The Mannings, etc) say that you don't learn that much from sitting. If he can call the plays and be protected, we might as well get the learning process out of the way as soon as possible.

As far as this thread if our QB depth chart is Cam, Moore, and Clausen I think it will be an open competition with the best guy winning the starting job. His ability to just make plays could allow them to ease him in there as a rookie who knows how quickly he's productive look at VY and The Golden Calf of Bristol.
