Newton on Mike & Mike

I agree with BJ. I don't want him running 20 times a game, but at the same time his ability to run is a major reason why he is great. It sounds like Chud gave a presentation to Rivera showing how they would best utilize Cam's abilities. My guess is they will design plays to allow him to highlight those abilities.

loved his responses to the length in verbiage vs. complexity of the offense issue.

it was fast and complex and effective. so much so that pro coaches are calling to find out more about it. unless you really look into what they did, the offense is easy to dismiss. what they did to defenses isn't and it won't be easy to counter. the problems defenses had with vick is nothing compared to what is going to happen with cam, esp. if they incorporate some of what was done in auburn.

chud's offense in san diego (and i do consider that offense his) was enough to make it the best offense in the NFL last year. you add in cam newton keeping alive long enough to wait for things to happen downfield or his ability to make something if everything is shut down as well as a faster paced no huddle hurry up offense and the OC quickly giving him the next play (something davidson could NEVER do) in his helmet and you have something that is really going to shake things up in the league.

i feel really good about what is going to happen.

having complex verbiage does not equate to a successful offense. having a simple language also doesn't mean a simple offense. you can have complex and very effective plays with simple names. no reason to make things more complicated than they need to be.

SD runs Norv's O, not Chuds.

Norv designed it, and called it. Chud helped with offensive game plan.

The SD offense was electric BECAUSE of Phillip Rivers. He is one of the Top 5 QB's in the game.

norv macro-managed the offense, chud micro managed it so that norv could be a macro manager. norv called the plays (most of the time, chud did some as well, more than the OC did) and the offense was based on his offensive mindset, but it was chud who drew up the plays and did the game planning, etc. it was chud that did the big work from the coaches point.

it could really be argued that he was able to be so productive because of the aggressiveness of chud's game plan and everything else he put together.

If Auburn's offensive scheme wasn't simplistic, then why did he tell Gruden that their motto was Simplistic = Fast? Kinda wishy washy to me. I think once the lockout is over, coaches need to tell him to just quit talking so much. It may not be hurting him, but I don't see it as helping him either. The more he says, the more there is to nitpick. Just do your job, keep quiet, work hard, and prove them wrong. In the end thats all that matters anyway.

He was drafted to run the offense, not to tell people that he can run the offense and defend his college career. The draft is done, he went #1. He has nothing to prove to the talking heads as far as the past. It's time to work on the future, and the less he talks about the past the sooner he can get to where he wants to be.

you obviously didn't get what he meant..

think about the time it takes for the coach to call out a # to Newton and then Newton relays that # to the offense...

now think about the coach having to send a 7 word play call out to Newton and then he has to huddle up to tell everyone that 7 word play call... (except it would more likely be a guy from the sidelines sends out hand signals that Cam would interpret)..

when you only have a # to call out to everyone, you get to the line faster than getting everyone huddled up to make sure everyone hears a 7 word play call.

No I got what he meant. They kept the names of the plays limited to a number, hell they do that in the NFL with the wristbands and they call a number from the sidelines. But he never called checks, protection calls, hot routes, made progession reads in the pocket, and barely audibled (if ever). None of it. That makes it a simple offense. So he needs to quit defending it and get over it. It doesn't mean he can't learn it, he just hasn't yet. If he means that the offense is simplistic then he should say that. But if he means that the number system was simplistic then say that instead. Otherwise it sounds like backtracking. Which is why he should talk less. Less room for criticism and distraction in the media. He's got enough of that, and more important things to do.

I see what you mean..

to debate that, I would have to know the intricacies of the Auburn offense.. and I'm guessing most everyone else here would as well.

    • Very True--and I am a former HS English teacher.
    • Not a Moore fan-but he had a few good games last year-but I want players that scare you--Renfrow's route running and intelligence, Legette's size, speed, and strength, AT's intelligence and route running, Coker's body control, strong hands, and abilty to win contested catches, and TMac's size, body control, and ability to find soft spots in zone coverages.  Horn gives them the ability to stretch the field and he plays special teams.   Moore has a nice smile and can dance.  He filled in well last season, but to get better as a team, you have to upgrade your players.  I think Moore is a bottom of the roster guy who got bumped when we drafted 2 WRs and signed a legit free agent.  Here is the thing--TMac makes us better because he is great against the zone--man?  Good luck with that.  AT's role can be reduced, and that is probably a good thing.  He can specialize in situational football. Coker?  Just getting started. XL?  Just getting started.  Drafting TMac was probably a bit of a wake up call, but XL will be better as the 2. Renfrow?  I see him splitting reps with AT--keeping both fresh and giving different looks. Horn?  Watch the safety cheat his side when he is in the game--I see a young Steve Smith type in him, but he has yet to play a game.  I hear that Morgan loves him.
