Newton: "The offense I ran at Auburn was NOT 'simple'.

again, the playcalling wasn't dumbed down. gus malzahn's offense is based not on complex plays or schemes, but on being able to get the ball snapped quickly, not giving defenses time to figure out what they were doing and wearing them out because they have no time for substitutions.

And isolating the back-side rusher. Meaning, Cam reads the rusher coming off his right side, and decides whether or not to hand the ball off, and send the running back to the left.

If he doesn't hand the ball off, he then has to decide whether he can beat the guy around the corner on the right side (or, get him into space, and pitch it to an option player trailing Cam), or run it up through a gap in the middle, and beat the linebackers.

That was the base of my argument. I never said it was dumbed down, i just said I wasn't going to rule out that it was. Numbered play calling was more used for speed and efficiency.

Cam did not have to read the defenses - check out the session Chucky had with Newton...scary.

What the hell are you talking about? Gruden himself, in people referencing Newton's little freeze when he asked him to regurgitate some long verbiage, said that Newton didn't have a problem with reading defenses.

Hell, he even said that Newton was one of the best in reading and breaking down defenses out of the QBs he had in his camp this year when he watched film and had Newton get up on the white board. Not sure where all of this is coming from.

sorry, i was agreeing with you.

i can see them using a sort of shorthand for the plays.

no need to dumb things down, just make the plays being called quick and easy to get out there.

I definitely remember the Auburn vs LSU game. LSU had the #1 ranked defense in the nation when they played Auburn. Then Cam cut up that Defense like a hot knife through butter. It was really hard to believe that LSU gave up 217yds rushing and 2TD from the QB! When they were known for stopping the run. Cam didn't have many big time play makers on offense besides yours truely...

That is true.

However, Cam DID NOT call the motions, formations, check-downs, etc. They were hand signalled in from the sideline. this may or may not have been due to limitations of Cam...we don't know.

The fact is that he WILL have to do those things in an NFL offense. I am not saying that he is incapable of learning this. Only that he has to learn something that he was never asked to do at Auburn.

Given a shortened offseason, the absolute best thing that can happen to Newton is for him to see the field sparingly this season.

Why are the play names always like "EAGLE FIRE SMOKE BOOM POW?"

I would be interested to know their origin as well..

I think everyone would prefer that, I just don't think we are gonna land one of those two. Anyone that comes here has to know that they are only gonna be a 1 year starter at most and will be looked at as more of a tutor than anything else. Mcnabb and Hasselbeck are still gonna want to lead a team.

I should have left the names out.. Hell, if Clausen started just to take the blows instead of Cam, that's better than forcing Cam out onto the field.
