Can someone shed some light on this idea that Newton is dumb?

Recommended Posts

I usually would think the race card wasn't a valid argument. But I stopped at the gas station yesterday to hear some "panthers" fans talking about Cam and one guy said "I can't believe we drafted that dumb N*****!" So take it for what it's worth. The majority of people aren't racist but that doesn't mean some aren't either.

This falls under the category of... Duh!

It happens both ways. There are dumb people (racist) everywhere.

Black guys who sound like Uncle Tom's? By "Uncle Tom", do you mean using proper English and expressing themselves clearly and succinctly? That is not a white thing, it is an intelligence thing. So you think using proper English is giving in to the man, and if you are a real black man you will butcher the language, slur words, and use slang common to street thugs?

Speaking correctly is not about race, it is about intelligence. If you want to separate your race from others by creating an identity that labels, then you are contributing to racial profiling, not opposing it.

Cam is not dumb, but some perceive that he is because he has some grammar issues. You do not hear Asians putting down other Asians for losing their accents. You do not hear whites from the South put down for overcoming the Southern drawl.

Uncle Tom is what blacks call other blacks because they are adapting to the world around them--every intelligent person does it. When we talk, others measure our intelligence. So, if you want people to think you are stupid, use bad grammar around them. Regardless of color, you will succeed in doing so.

Ha ha!!! Funny how 0% of Americans use proper English. The Brits still make fun of our country's "English" to this day. They used to say that most of the Americans were idiots because of the way we didn't properly speak the King's language.

Stupid Americans, when are we gonna speak proper English to prove our intelligance. ;)

That is why I tell my British friends that I don't speak English I speak American :D

I don't think Cam Newton sounds stupid at all. I think at times he sounds inexperienced. He sounds pretty average to me. I've heard very few people who speak grammatically sound English, and I'm in academia. While Cam doesn't sound like an academic by any stretch, he doesn't sound like some dumbass either.

he knew it was stolen so he tossed it out a window to try to avoid being caught with it is my take. I did a bit of reading about this because originally I didn't believe he knew it was stolen and thought he was just freaking out that the cops were beating at his door or something, but...

What happened (according, admittedly, to Florida people) was someone was downloading illegal items (songs etc) with the computer after it was stolen from some other undergraduate. The owner of the computer got a warning via the campus IT people that his internet access was being suspended for downloading MP3s and poo. So he told them hell I don't have my computer it must be someone on campus. They traced the internet connection back and checked the logs, finding out that someone named Cam Newton was logging in to the campus internet with the computer.

The police wrote down the serial # on a piece of paper and went to investigate. In Cam's room they found a laptop of the make and model of the stolen version. They asked Cam about it. He let them see it. They checked the serial #, and found out it was not the # that they had written on a piece of paper. So they wrote down the # of Cam's, then left.

When they double checked the number it turned out that the cops had transcribed the number wrong from the original report of what was stolen. The actual number matched what they had written from Cam's room. Cam tossed the thing out a window and then had a friend dispose of it. The friend texted Cam about it, which the police ended up reading when they his cell phone.

Cam later completed a pretrial program to avoid a sentence that would have destroyed his life. Since Florida, it truly appears he's been on the straight and narrow. I do think he has turned his life around and I am glad for it, because he's a Panther now.

As to the topic, Cam undoubtedly receives hate because of his racism, but it is too easy to fall into the hole of thinking anyone who has a criticism of Cam Newton is a racist...

thanks for the investigating and i agree with the conclusion except for this unfortunate wording at the end. i'm guessing that you mean race and not racism....right?

Racism or not, the hate for this kid is just unbelievable. Hell, a big chunk of our own fanbase will be happy if he fails because they hate Cam more than they love the Panthers.
i'd like to disagree, but ufortunately i think it's the case. people would much rather open up a big can of "i told you so" brand crow than have him live up to his potential, succeed, and get this team it's first ring.

those people are pretty easy to pick out in here. they spend most of their time trolling. newton threads and starting crap threads about him. they aren't the only ones, just the most visible.

you don't have to love the guy, but you don't have to crap on everything that is said or written about him either. much better to be riding on his nuts than continue with the trolling and constant poo pooing and negative posts about him. wait until we actually see him play/practice with the team before crapping on the guy.

It never ceases to amaze me how badly off topic these posts get after a few pages. It's just a continuing example of American ADD.

It was the Gruden blindside that created this buzz that Cam's dumb because he couldn't recite some 12 word play call that he never used at Auburn. But that is complete nonsense..

I was just listening to the audio companion of Pat Kirwins' great book "Take your eyes off the ball" (available @ patkirwin.com) that was recorded last year. Pat interviews Jim Miller about being a quarterback in the NFL. While discussing the "languages" of different systems, Jim nonchalantly mentions how Chan Gaily (Steelers 94-97, 4 AFC Central titles) streamlined Ron Erhardts' system to a numbering system (from "zero strong slant 38 boss to say "6"). Jim then goes on about how that allowed him more time under center to read the defense, since he was not in the huddle barking out an additional 15 words.

To criticize Cam about this is pure bull puckery. He has no control over how Gene Chiznik wants to call his system. Additionally, it says NOTHING about Cam himself.

The real question that you have to ask is can Cam read the defense? Can he pick up the blitz? Can he remember the 100 or so plays selected for the game on Sunday?

Everywhere he has gone, he's done just that. :cam: is a winner, pure and simple.

BTW: :cam: is in NoLa today to pick up the 2011 Manning Award for top QB in the nation!

Go hate on that for your Sat.

What I'm saying is that Cam Newton was raised in an area where everyone spoke with a certain dialect. It's not his fault where he was born or how everyone else around him talked. Like someone else said, people who are native Spanish speakers and then learn to talk in English are also perceived as unintelligent for the same reasons, when in reality, it has no bearing on how smart or stupid someone is.

Because ignorant white people such as yourself think he needs to sound like Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, or Barack Obama, Cam Newton TRIES to speak the way that white people want him to. And he puts so much effort into it that it ends up coming across as him trying too hard to sound intelligent. He can't win for losing.

Speaking correctly is not about race, it is about intelligence. If you want to separate your race from others by creating an identity that labels, then you are contributing to racial profiling, not opposing it.

Yep, everyone should talk how white people want them to. Thanks Strom Thurmond.

Cam is not dumb, but some perceive that he is because he has some grammar issues. You do not hear Asians putting down other Asians for losing their accents. You do not hear whites from the South put down for overcoming the Southern drawl.

Actually, yeah that does happen all the time. Do you know how many times I get called a Yankee because I don't talk like I have a wad of cum in my mouth? You go on in the VERY NEXT PARAGRAPH to say that Uncle Tom is a term that black people call other black people who don't talk like "thugs" as you so eloquently put it. Doesn't that disprove what you JUST said here?

Uncle Tom is what blacks call other blacks because they are adapting to the world around them--every intelligent person does it. When we talk, others measure our intelligence. So, if you want people to think you are stupid, use bad grammar around them. Regardless of color, you will succeed in doing so.

Have you ever heard James Carville talk? He sounds like Foghorn Leghorn. But that hasn't stopped CNN from making him a regular on their political team. I wonder if an intelligent black person who sounds like Lil' Jon could get on? I'm sure he'd get an equally warm reception, because race doesn't matter!

I'd be willing to wager 10% of it is based on his race alone .. yes i said it .. " They be hatin cause he be black mmhm "

Either that or white QBs tend to avoid those problems. Can't recall Peyton Manning fighting dogs or spreading STDs and Dru Brees hasn't stolen any laptops.

I never heard anyone criticize Rodney Peete's character either.
