Camping Tents

Lumps

Recommended Posts

Alright so as a former eagle scout, I used to camp all the time. That was almost over 10 years ago. In that day Eureka! and Coleman tents were the best tents in the price range of $100-$250. I am talking about quality and weight, for back pack camping.

I have planned a 3 day trip to the Great Smokey Mountains. I have never been and I am pretty exited. I hope to see some black bears. I have been researching tents for a while now and it seems Coleman has moved their manufacturing to China and the quality has suffered. I am also reading that Eureka! isn't making them as well as they did in the 80s/90s either.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a '4 man tent' (around 7x9) under 10 lbs for $100-250 that will last me a good while?Or even a brand that focuses on quality?

I am looking at the Kelty tents but have also looked at the Sierra Desings, REI and North Face. Trying to make a final decision is really tough. For me that is a lot of money so I want it to be worth it. Quality is my goal, so if anyone has opinions that would be nice :)

Just like the Marines, you are either an Eagle Scout, or not, there are no formers.

That said. How often do you plan on using this tent going forward?

Coleman user for 20 years. Bought a 4 man (or one man and three women!) tent. Its pretty big, takes about 10 minutes to set up. I used it last weekend and it is perfect size for a full size air mattress, a dog bed, and bags, etc...

I also use a Hillary 2 person tent when I am back packing. Its about 10 years old and still holds up great.

I think that when I have children I will get a larger coleman with separate compartments for kids and a dog!

Yea yea yea I say that because back then I could tell you the oath off hand. I could tie 20 knots. I could bike 25 miles and earn those achievements. Now days I couldn't run more than a couple miles, I have forgotten everything. I earned the eagle level being brought up hardcore by the Mormon church so I tend to put it in that area of memories that you don't want to remember.

Memories are coming back with all this camping research. I want this tent to last forever. I am liking the marmot limelight 3 or the NEMO p3.

Everyone likes Coleman, but I am talking backpack camping not car camping. I will be 5-15 miles away from a base camp. I hear about coleman leaks and what not, I don't want to be 10 miles out and have a fiberglass pole snap lol.
