Brentson Buckner Interview on NFL Sirius this morning

There is probably a feed to the interview somewhere, but here is the gist. They interviewed him to get a reaction to the Panther's locking out the media from the workout. Buckner said it was fine because the players didn't want this to be a circus which is what it would have been with Cam Newton there. He said the media wasn't at off season strength and conditioning activities so this should be no big deal. He went on to talk about the Panthers and Richardson. He reiterated what many felt which was that Richarson hung the team out to dry and sacrified the team success to save money and curb spending prior to the lockout which he wanted. It was to show the players that the owners were not going to spend big bucks even in an uncapped year and he did it with the Panthers to prove his point. Buckner said it left a bad taste in lots of fans' mouths and that getting Newton was a way to get the fans back and generate excitement. He said there is no chance that Newton isn't the starter day 1 although the team will go through the formalities. He said Carolina is excited to finally a face of the franchise and a franchise quarterback and that the Newton era would start this year.

hard to believe that anyone representing the panthers would state this. i'm surprised.

I think we really need to keep Williams as Newton is going to struggle without a dominant run game. We can throw Newton out there and try to skimp on the supporting cast.

One thing I found interesting while listening to NFL Radio the other day is they were talking about how the teams with good to great running games, and solid Defenses will most likely be the better teams to start the next season the longer the lockout goes along. Main reason they were saying is a running the ball is fairly simple and it takes much longer for a passing game to get into synce etc.

That being said, if the Panthers are able to keep Williams.. him along with Stewart, Goodsen etc might result in the Panthers have a much better season than many are expecting.

panthers won't have an issue keeping williams. he wants to stay and he's part of the core they want to keep. it won't be a problem.

Williams wants to win and get paid. He can be friends with the guys in Carolina regardless.......I don't think keeping Williams is the lock many here do. I mean, a year ago if I said Steve Smith would pout his way to a trade the standard line would be "Jerry is like a father to Steve and he would never leave us....he loves us too much. That is crazy talk".

Williams has said that he wants to be here. And with his draft day party and his analysis of who "we" were going to take, I think it's a lock that he is back. With the history of JR/Hurney paying to keep Deshaun Foster (others) here, I think you can bank on Deangelo being back. I will be surprised if he is not.

Of course he said he wants to be here.......but that doesn't mean as much as people think. Why would he want to rule out a team he would be happy to play for.....pending there wasn't a team he considered a better spot. I mean, Williams is on record saying there factors that will determine where he plays (and QB and competitiveness matter)

Carolina didn't have the backfield they do now when they hung onto Foster.....nor was the league and rules geared away from the run like it is now.

if you've got a young rookie QB, you have to have an RB corps that can carry the ball well over 30 times a game. you don't go into the season with a new QB like that and get rid of such a major part of your running corps. most teams try to shore it up. wouldn't help the team at all to let him go.

also...williams is a very positive minded person, which is something you need for a team going through changes like this is. that is something that you could never really accuse smith of being (since you brought him up), esp. in the past couple years.

the benefits of working a deal to keep williams around far outweigh any negatives. it just makes too much sense to keep him around.

    • Umm yeah. When did he get it done at the right time? I seem to remember a 4-6 finish and needing Atlanta to win our way into the playoffs but whatever.
    • I mean....no lies detected. See above. We have traded a fortune to draft a guy #1 overall that people have lowered standards for to the point that not playing like Jimmy Clausen and looking like a poor man's Kyle Allen occasionally is worthy of a contract extension making him one of the highest paid QB's in the league. That is cope on steroids.
    • summary: "let's talk about your draft, what did you think about Freeling" Dan:   guys with a huge upside, can come in and compete to start.  High ceiling "he does what for your offense?" Dan:   it's hard to find left tackles, guys that big and athletic.  We have Icky coming off an injury, we signed Walker, I believe your offensive line can never be too strong.  If we're going to win the game, it's gotta be up front on both sides of the ball, so we make a point of emphasis on making both sides of the front as strong as possible. "how many mocks did you see Monro falling to you." Not many times, left tackles are gonna go a lot earlier than when we took him.  We want to add the best player, in free agency or the draft"  that's our philosophy, to get the best players possible. "Hunter and Brazzell." Dan:  we followed the board.  Lee we felt very highly of him , super strong.  Brazzel so flexible and loose, can open the verticle.  Will Lee we held in high regard. "you take a look at your receiver room, Coker, my goodness, your offensive rookie of the year in Tet.  Lost Rico, but there is Jonathan Brooks. " Brooks coming off two knee injuries, he worked his way back, looking great, fully healthy, will help in pass and run game.  Icky, not sure when he's coming back but we're excited about both "plan on extending Bryce" we'll keep talking, will keep internally.  We believe in him, has such a great grasp of Canales and offense, has improved every year. "he's clearly come back from the benching, the arrow is trending up, where does he feel" Bryce knows where we stand with him, when and if a deal gets done, he knows we feel great with him, we'll get something done at the right time. "if this a prove it situation?" everyone in the building has to prove it, has to earn it. Tmac was everything we wanted, his work ethic, he's so big and talented, but he puts the work in, and is a great teammate. "your level of expectation, the building's level of expectation for 2026 "our goal is to win the division every year, we know we have to earn it.  we have to put the work in every day, proving it on the practice field, and our  guys know that." "schedule" we haven't opened at home in 2 or 3 years.  We love prime time games, hope we get some "
