I'm starting to think 89 will be here in 2011

Recommended Posts

Theory on why he's been going out of his way over the past week to start to soften his position on being traded:

He never thought the lockout would go on this long, even if a lot of other people did. Now that it has, he's started to read the writing on the wall that there's going to be virtually no way the Panthers will be able to trade him for something of equal value once the lockout ends *even if they wanted to*. The limited timeframe is going to make trades like that extremely difficult to do. So he's either been told by someone in the front office or has just realized on his own that he's probably going to have to be here this season after all.

What do you guys think?

If that would be the case then it will be a lose-lose situation for both. Its not that I dont want Smitty its just better for him and the Panthers to get a trade done. This of course assuming Smitty wants to leave.

I hope he does stay. It will only help us more in the long run

For one: it makes us exponentially more of a threat to opposing defenses

For two: hopefully he has a super ridiculous year and if he still wants to leave he will improve his stock and we'll get a higher pick.

Steve Smith staying only helps us! We'll see how it plays out though. I'm still cautiously optimistic at this point.

There's been an average of 1 entire post per hour on this board today. People making new threads in June on an NFL board during a lockout is not a bad thing, it's a good thing.
same thread over and over?

never mind....

Everyone here is speculating...

First off prayers out to his wife

Secondly, nobody here knows what kind of health problems she's going through, nor do they know to the extent of which they are.

For people to assume it will be his wife's call just shows ignorance IMO.

This is EXACTLY why he keeps his mouth shut!!!

Thank God, this is just speculation in the Huddle and not mainstream news.

I'm honestly a Lil disappointed by the lack of class shown throughout this thread.

What does that even mean though? He'll retire if he's not traded?

I think it means that he or she probably wants to move near her family(wherever she's from).

“Right now there's a lot of things on my plate with my wife and her health. My family needs me at home, and that's the most important thing,” Smith said. “Football right now is the last thing on my mind when it comes to some of the things in the last month that we've been dealing with as a family.”

Who knows.....I'm just trying to read between the lines.

    • Why would we not be contenders? As long as Bryce plays like he did when he came back, we absolutely can be contenders...that is...   if the defense plays better... which is why adding someone like Ramsey when we have a QB on a rookie deal and can afford it makes sense IMO. No one thought of the Commanders being contenders last year or the Texans the year before and so on and so forth. Top-end QB play, especially for a guy on a rookie deal, changes everything in terms of timelines. Regardless of what this board thinks, I hope the front office is willing to he aggressive in thks window we currently have with a rookie QB deal
    • Would absolutely love to have him. I dont think he would require more than a 5th rounder. The biggest thing with his contract is the amount of guaranteed money. As long as they can work out and scenario where the Panthers aren't on the hook for a lot of that, I think it's a no-brainer. The Panthers can come up with $20M at the drop of a hat with restructuring Moton's contract, so there definitely isn't an issue from a money perspective. Jaycee paired with Ramsey along with Mike Jack would give us one of the best CB groups in the league. The one caveat I see is that safety still remains our biggest current weakness. We need a starting caliber S more than CB, simply put. But adding someone like Ramsey would be amazing as long as the compensation made sense. Ramsey could also play for FS snaps also. I also dont understand this nonsense about being seasons away. We have a QB on a rookie deal who was playing at an elite level to end last season. Within reason, now is absolutely the time to make moves like trading for Ramsey.
    • He'd be a huge upgrade for this year, but we're still not going to be contenders with him and I'd rather keep the cap space to roll into next season to spend on a younger player who can be an impact starter for us for the next 3-5 years while we're hoping to contend.
