Denver media looking at Williams

I say we sign Williams to only a 3 year contract.

I say we sign him on a year to year contract. This way if he gets hurt we can cut our loses. Now that I think about it, we should do this for every player.

I am sure DW will not have any issue taking a 3 year deal when he can get a 5 year deal from numerous other teams. Also, I am sure he will appreciate what the Panthers are doing after he had 2 pro bowl years (got shafted one year in voting, but we all know he should have made it) and got paid around $750k both of those years. He didn't pull a Brandon Marshall or Revis and hold out or refuse to play. He played out his contract like he should have when he could have kicked and screamed and gotten a lot more money.

People here get furious when players leave and they feel deserted, but are real quick to dismiss a player and move on. We were a Super Bowl contender a couple years ago and DW was one of the primary reasons - don't forget that.

Signing them longer leaves more Cap space.

It doesn't matter if you sign him to a multi-year contract as long as the signing bonus or guaranteed money is reasonable. Contracts aren't usually guaranteed so you can cut your losses most times, you just accelerate the cap hit for the signing bonuses and guaranteed money that is typically prorated over the life of the contract. if you manage the guaranteed money then it doesn't matter how long the contract is on paper. You could sign Williams for 6 years and cut him after 2 or 3 with few consequences if you gave him roster bonuses down the road instead of all guaranteed upfront money.
