Maybe Rivera is high on him from his Chicago days and just wants to give him a chance.

They didn't cross paths, since Rivera was with us when the Bears drafted Payne. Steve Wilks (our secondary coach) who was Payne's position coach for his first 2 years might have put in a good word for him.

Pat Y on Payne:

The Carolina Panthers have signed former Chicago safety Kevin Payne, according to Brad Biggs.

Payne started all 16 games at strong safety for Chicago in 2008 and had a career-high four interceptions. His 2009 season was cut short by an injury and he was traded to St. Louis in 2010. But Payne missed the entire 2010 season with an injury.

I would imagine the reason behind that is to avoid the media stakeout at the stadium. It is best for all involved (CJ, D-Will, and Hurney) to avoid answering questions about the meeting they just had.

All I know is that we better re-sign both their asses!!!!
