Charles Johnson agrees to terms *CONFIRMED!* OP updated

A bit more that what I was expecting. I hope this doesn't affect the team's ability to retain D'Will and Anderson.

It won't. Hurney is a lot of things, but an ignorant cap killer is def NOT one of them. 72 is a large number, but it's not really 72. Every contract ever signed is backloaded and incentive-laden. Always look at the guaranteed portion and that's the part to really worry about. CJ hasn't even peaked yet like Mr. GoofySmile did. This is a victory.

Charles Johnson is tied for the second highest paid DE in the entire league. Does something look wrong here? Dwight Freeney and Charles Johnson have an identical contract. $72mil over 6 years with a $30mil signing bonus. Crazy when put into these terms.

#1 - Julius Peppers

#2A - Dwight Freeney

#2B - Charles Johnson

#4 - Justin Tuck

#5 - John Abraham

#6 - Jared Allen

freeney definitely has the track record but you could argue johnson is better because he is a complete DE. freeney is essentially useless against the run and always has been, while johnson is great against the run + pass rushing.

Exactly. CJ is not worth what he is making as of now. If he can match last year a 2-3 times then I will be more than happy but those are big shoes to fill. I would have hated seeing him in ATL but damn I really think this might be a bit too much, only time will tell.

It sound like we could have had him if we matched that offer... I like Johnson ... No doubt but i knew our GM would not over spend for him (12+ mil a season)

actually... I would have been pissed but since we feel like we are a pass rusher away... i would learn to accept it.. I would have easily been happy giving him 8-9 mil a year (and i felt that was alot) .... But 12.5+ mil for a guy that had 1 awesome year.... Just couldnt see our GM doing that... Could Johnson ball out (10+ sacks a season) and earn that contract... yea.. the guy can.. But right now... it was just one year..

Its hard for me to say because he is a Panther but i like Charles Johnson... Not enough to make him one of the highest paid DE's tho (after 1 great year)

You're an odd Falconite you seem to not be forced to breath out of your anus.

Thus I will retort peacefully.

I have been watching Johnson for 4 years.

He has given 100% everytime on the field.

When he was drafted he needed strenght/conditioning and technique.

he has gotten progressively better every season.

His first season starting he busted out.

While this is A ton of cash. Who better to spend it on than the guy you as an organization has grown into a wanted talent.

Atlanta didn't offer as much because they simply cant.

You have 3 olinemen to keep.

I dont know your depth issues, but I know Ryan needs a running game and some time to throw.

If Atl had the chance, they would have paid the man.

Lost that OT to free agency and you are going to wish you had IMO.

It looks real scary, but if you look at the numbers he was one of the elite ends last year, and hopefully he continues to perform.

lol it's less than we would've paid peppers to show up for 3 games a season

what do you think we can sign anybody for vet min no matter how good a player they are?

Agreed...Johnson is a motor guy that also has a lot of talent. He's not a physical freak like a lot of these guys but he really reminds me of Freeney and Mathis. The guy can rush the passer and he doesn't give up so in my book 32 million guaranteed to CJ is a better deal than signing Peppers to 42/91 million.

No, b/c the market goes up each year - inflation.

Coke doesn't cost 5 cents anymore, and gas isn't 99 cents a gallon. Somebody is gonna get a bigger contract than all of them with probably less credentials in about 3 more years.

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
