Calm down.. im having a calm convo... so all the side talk is not needed.

We are around 10 mil in cap space (not including the extra 3 mil) ... Also we could have redid contracts and cut guys (Chancey Davis and Jamaal Anderson) and got to around 30 mil under the cap...

Like Charles Johson said... We got scared... It wasnt we didnt have it or couldnt come up with it.... We didnt want to pay him that much

Also im not downing Charles Johnson... I wanted the guy to be a falcon but not for 12.5+ mil... If he ball out like he did this year thruout the contract... He is worth it but right now after just 1 great year... I wouldnt pay him that.

I get why you guys did it tho... You had the cap (had to spend money) , The guy is a good player, and a rebuilding team has to over pay to keep players or bring in FA (we had to do it in 08 with Turner.. Its just he has proved to be worth every dime now (even looks like a great deal now) but at the time we had to over pay for him (based on what he has done to the point we signed him) ...

But d*mn.... 12.5 mil

Also... We have good depth... We have been drafting for this situation... I do think we will try to resign Clabo our RT now (it was either him or Johnson)

Impressive ATL person.

For your lack of trolling and actually talking I have given you 50 swag.

Hardly' date=' it's not hard to understand how contracts are structured if you do a little research....to think that this contract made it so we couldn't sign any other marquee free agents is asinine....[/quote']

I agree at that level but to truly understand NFL contracts is more difficult than you think.

Hell, no one knew till today that TD wasn't a FA...that's some serious poo.

It is evident in this thread, that the majority of the fans on this site have no grasp of what a starting defensive end of his talent, is worth.

It could have been more. I was expecting higher. He got a good deal, and we're lucky to have him for the next 6 years.

Fans are just saying he has only been starting material recently which is true. When talking this kind of money no one cares about talent, we are talking about production and that is why fans bring up the 'one year' argument.

As a fan I am more happy than not, I believe he is worth that money to the organization, but he is worth that much to the panthers, not worth it in general, yet. Otherwise someone else would have offered him just a much. In reality CJ couldn't get close to that much anywhere in the NFL period.

I am exited and glad we could keep a spectacular player on defense. But I am more worried about offense however, seemingly like every off season and have been for the longest time. For once it'd be nice not to be.

I just pointed out in the other thread, in fans' minds DE production = sacks.

So, taking that into account, CJ had 10 over his first 2 years and he barely played. Then he became the starter last year and had 12. Combine that with the info someone posted earlier in the offseason about how statistically he broke down as one of the best DEs in the league in both pass rushing and run defense...

Ummm, yeah... I think a lot of folk around here should shut up and enjoy it.

I have no clue why some of you people are bitching. If we let him go to Atlanta you would have all cried that Jerry and Hurney are cheap and that we're doomed for the near future on defense. It was either give him a fugton of money or watch him kill us twice a year for the next almost-decade.

And its not like he's making $12.5m this year. That isn't how contracts work. We have plenty of room to sign Cofield, Mebane, Edwards, Weddle, D-Will, TD, Anderson, Rogers, Joseph, WHOEVER.

If Johnson god forbid does not produce he will not see all that money. If he got 30 mil guaranteed then good for him not sure how much of that will hit the cap. The numbers sound high but I'm sure it wont harm us in the long term....Try to find a DE that had his #s last year that isn't locked up. I would have given him 6 years 60 mil

Gantt said CJ will account for about 6-7m against our cap this year. Which leaves us with $60 more millions.

This is very true and I suppose it is worth overpaying him just a bit to be sure he doesn't go to ATL...

Seriously who needs to be 5 hours closer to home who you can buy your own fuging personal jet?

    • To kick this up, The Athletic has a really comprehensive piece out where pretty much all QB questions are addressed. It is worth seeing.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083539/2026/03/04/starting-quarterback-projections-free-agency-draft/?source=user_shared_article I’m putting something specific here but it should have a thread or something. It is an extensive exercise.  This is a dense write up with a lot of column inches used, about the Jets and Murray and Reich, all this stuff.. then it goes to backup QB and there is Dalton.  I am pasting that part: As for Dalton, Reich is installing the offense he was trying to run in Carolina in 2023 before he got fired, and Dalton was with the Panthers then; he’s an ideal option as a veteran backup to replace Taylor. Reich said this about Dalton in 2023: “The way he's throwing the football, the way he works through progressions, the way he handles the operation. … Since day one (when) he walked in the door, I'm like, 'This guy is starter-worthy.' You guys know I've said that all along. He's, in my opinion, one of the best 32 quarterbacks in the world.” ——— That’s true love lol. I never heard any of this. Pretty crazy I think, considering how the year went.   Anyway the dream is not dead. .
    • The Seahawks traded for wide receiver/returner Rashid Shaheed at the trade deadline. He proved to be a key acquisition. Shaheed returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the regular season and had a 95-yard kickoff return in the postseason. Shaheed, though, is scheduled for free agency. So, the 12 games he played, including the postseason, might be the extent of his time in Seattle. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Shaheed and the Seahawks are not close to an extension, and the expectation is that the two-time Pro Bowler will hit free agency. Shaheed has 153 receptions for 2,243 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four-year career to go along with three punt return touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown. He ranks 13th on PFT’s top-100 free agents. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-rashid-shaheed-appears-headed-to-free-agency
