Panthers signing Derek Anderson

Recommended Posts

Since there is some dispute over the thread title may I suggest it be titled, "we all know Derek Anderson sucks but let's all take turns trying to justify us signing him given his one magical season under coach chud"

Derek Anderson struggled in Arizona, granted but look at what he had to work with? Obv he had 3 great WR's in Fitz, Boldin and Breaston, but outside of that, he had no TE's and no running game. Derek is NOT a good enough QB to do well in an offense that calls 75% of their plays as pass plays. Now with us, he would have 1 pro bowl WR, 2 pro bowl caliber TE's, arguably the best rushing attack in the nfl when healthy, and one of the top Olines in the NFL(also when healthy, lookin at u Otah). I don't expect him to come in and replicate the 3800 yrd 29/19 season he had in '08, but with a balanced attack and enough weapons, I don't see why he couldnt hae a 2800 yrd, 20/17 statline this season, and take us to the playoffs. Give Cam a year to sit and learn, I think it will give him a much higher chance to succeed in the long run if he can learn the game at his own pace.

they had Fitzgerald, Breaston and Doucet, Boldin is gone, as for the running game, it wasnt great, but it wasnt so bad that it couldnt win games, this team was a playoff team before Anderson and couldnt win that sorry division that only took 7 wins.

I view the development of Cam Newton as the primary goal for the organization.

The penultimate goal of every franchise should be the development of their franchise QB.

Cam's development gives the organization the best chance to win the Superbowl and have sustained success.

Anderson is an ideal QB candidate because he's in a unique position having played directly under Chudzinski's in his version of the Coryell offense and executed the offense at a high level.

That knowledge would be a great assest in Cam's development.

I don't understand how/why some fan's can't see how big of a benefit it could be.*shrugs*

Whatever Anderson does on the field is a bonus; if he plays at a high level great if not then he won't be the starter for very long.

Either way Cam will see the field, I'm guessing here but I fully expect Chudz to have a The Golden Calf of Bristol-esque Redzone package for Cam to run. (Chudz would be crazy not to have one)

I think Boldin was there his first year with the team, and their running game was trash, didn't they draft Beanie Wells in the first round the following season?

No one is screaming DA would be anything better than average here (I know I'm not at least) But fwiw, there's nothing wrong with signing a guy that the OC practically created and having him COMPETE with our QB's. At the very least he'll be a veteran presence in the form of someone who actually knows poo about the offense that's being ran here.

Would you guys really be comfortable with Cam (Or Jimmy) running to Jake asking how to run a play?

Really?!

honestly, i would because Jake has been here and is an older player than Anderson is and knows the NFL, but like i said, i dont really want a vet.

Far too much is made of the question "is he a mentor", in regards to having a veteran QB on the roster. I think it's fictional aspect promoted by the media to write stories for them. There are ZERO quarterbacks in this league that do not want to start and will not handle it poorly if they are demoted to back up quarterback unless they've lost the fire to play. The "value" of having a veteran QB on the roster is for the younger players to WATCH him prepare, see how much work he puts into gameplanning and working the playbook, watching how he performs on game day, and watching his mistakes and learning from those so they don't have to make them on their own.

Do you think Joe Montana invited Steve Young to take his job? Nobody wants to lose their job to some smart ass rookie. I don't care how well they talk it up in the media about doing everything they can to help the kid, they aren't coaches. They aren't paid to be coaches. They want to start and they want to win and they want personal success. If they can offer something to a young kid on the way, they usually do it. However, signing up a veteran and expecting him to be a second QB coach is having too many voices in the kid's ear hole. If you trust your QB coach, there is no need for a "mentor" veteran QB.

Plus, Cam does not strike me as the kind of kid that is so shy that he needs a veteran to bring him out of his shell to ask questions and to learn from. I just hope he's not so confident he won't listen to his coaches.

Actually yes, I would. To be honest, I would rather have Jake mentoring these guys then Anderson, Jake just seems like a better person to act as a mentor (friendly guy, knows how to play -- although he hasn't be able to preform in recent times -- and a lot of other things that I would want in a mentor.

Of course I still would have getting Burgler over him, and probably some others if I really looked into free agency.

    • This was soooo spot on about everything from the board environment to the QB guru extremist terrible takes. I wish more people on this board would elevate their energy and knowledge so we could have a fun board again. Cheers to better Panther Fan Culture.
    • Give me Mitchell Evans over T Sanders in this run heavy offense any day of the week.
    • What's up gents, the OGs remember me, the guy who single-handedly gave the Panthers the greatest uniform in history moniker. Not too long after that I got involved with Pro Football Focus (pre-Collinsworth acquisition) and ended up taking backseat here to preserve some objectivity. But from a distance I noticed a lot. After the end of the Cam era this place devolved into the most un-fun, petty, negative cesspool of whining and bitching that has ever graced the internet. The worst part of it all is that the level of discussion turned into the most ill-informed, hot-take, unnuanced crap, rife with people talking out of their posteriors as if they have any clue about what they are watching. Once you get into the professional side of the sport and actual film rooms, you start to understand there's an absurd number of moving parts to pretty much every snap and the details you are privy to are truly only half the picture. The absolute most important thing I learned from being part of professional level football analysis is that quarterbacking is literally the most intricate and difficult position in all of professional sports, and that the NFL itself is struggling to develop any workable model that allows them to understand what makes one succeed vs what makes one fail. Because of this paradox it has also made the quarterback position itself grossly overvalued from a fan and media standpoint, creating an absurd fixation on the results delivered by a single player who has to rely on the contributions of everyone around them. This also drives the dreaded inflation of QB salaries that inevitably cause even elite teams to lose key talent all to pour cash into the one player supposed to be able to single-handedly elevate the entire team (and defense and special teams and coaching and ownership by some mysterious proxy), yet without those same players even talented teams can wander the wilderness searching for the right guy to take advantage of their talent window. The discussions the last few years around Bryce has personified this insanity, as this board has devolved into some sort of electronic civil war between the hyperbolic Young supporters and the vitriolic Bryce haters. The reality, like practically everything in this world, is somewhere in the middle. He has traits that can absolutely elevate a team with creativity, play recognition, off-arm angle throws, mental toughness, etc. He's also physically limited, with mostly "good-enough" qualities for most situations that a professional quarterback is asked to do, and will never be an overpowering physical force like pre-injury Cam. But "good-enough" physicality represents a large majority of championship-winning quarterbacks, even in the modern era. There's a reason the corpse of Peyton Manning took the chip from elite physical specimen Cam, because the team surrounding him was talented enough to get him there, while we all know Cam was the driving force of that 2015 team. That's no knock on him, that's just how the game of football tends to work: the more complete team usually wins. The summary is this: if this team lives or dies solely on the performance of its quarterback, then it is absolutely a paper tiger even if he plays brilliantly week in and out. There are no superheroes in this sport, there are only conduits that proxy the collective efforts of much of the team around them. And no one alive can tell you how the position is played perfectly, it's all a confluence of circumstance and what unique collection of traits each player brings to the position, which can never be truly recreated season after season, even for the same player on the same team. If this place remains a raging hellscape of idiotic hot takes I will happily remove myself again and do something more productive for yet another decade, but maybe's there hope that we can all get back to the old adage, and keep pounding.
