that's not a good way to look at it. Servers (at least when I was one) have to claim a certain percentage of their sales as tips for tax purposes. They also have to tip out a percentage to bar and bus boys based on those sales. if you don't give them their 15-20% then you might actually be taking money out of their pocket.

Waiter worked for a couple of hours waiting on MJ and made $150. More than he/she is probably worth.

Just because someone drops $5k on a dinner does NOT mean that the waiter/waitress there should be pulling down $1k (20%) for his/her 2-3 hours of work.

Tipping should be tied to the service performed....not the value of the tip.

I often tip 40-50% if it is on a small tab. But, only 10% if the tab is over $300 bucks.

You should stay at home.

Yeah that was a very stupid, ignorant comment from MadHatter. I hope he is just trollin.

I tip 15% and if the service is horrendous I tip in change that = up to like 2 dollars ( but only for special occasions like girl/guy who takes the bad day out on me and party , someone that leaves us at the table no refill or double check for 10+ mins. ... If it's better than I expected I tip 20%.

If anything I am an over tipper at a bar. At restaraunts I try to do around 20% bc my mom used to waitress when I was a kid and I was a busboy for a couple years in highschool.

Bar/Casino tipping is a whole different ball game imo. At the bar I spend way to much on tips, because when it gets crowded you want the bar tender to be able to hook you up.

I wonder if the specific examples they bring up are really an indication of bad tipping habits or just a rare case where they got terrible service and tipped accordingly.

I don't go by a set % like a lot of you guys have brought up. In general I am a very good tipper, sometimes as much as 50% if the service is exceptional. But on the flipside I have no problem leaving next to nothing if the service blows. Sorry but if you want my money then maybe just maybe you shouldn't be outside smoking and texting while my food sits in the window ready for 20 minutes getting cold cause you're too lazy to waddle your fat ass over and pick it up. Just a thought....

Servers at high end restaurants do not claim 15% of their sales as tips for tax purposes for this very reason.

I am a very good tipper, and have had many waiters/waitresses actually catch me in the parking lot to thank me for the overly generous tip. I typically give over double what the avg person gives.

I tip the pizza delivery guy at least $10. He has gas costs and is usually working crappy hours.

I give no less than $5 for a lunch tip....usually about 50%.

My comment is more on the very expensive meals. How can anyone say that a waiter who worked for 2 hours on a $5k dinner should be tipped $1k. That is $500 an hour....or the equivalent of someone who makes $1 million salary per year. (Avg 2000 hours per year).

The amount paid should be comensurate with the service and work given....not JUST the amount of the bill.
