The thing is that in the NFL there is no such thing as standing still. While it may seem like nothing is happening, it's not true. This is a young team, and those young players are working on improving, getting bigger and stronger, and working on the technical and mental aspects of their game. Guys like Johnson, Godfrey, and Otah should be much better this season due to working in the off-season program along with the additional year of maturing in the system. Not to mention players, such as Bernadeau and Schwartz, that we fans tend to think of as an afterthought, but the team seems to really like that should also improve with a full year and off-season program under their belt.

Also, we will fill holes in the draft. Despite what many want to think, we don't really have all that many holes. Offense is pretty well set (Like JD or not, he is the starter), and on defense we only need a DT and CB (assuming Pep plays under the tag). And CB is iffy depending on how we think Marshall will do in Meeks' defense. So the only clear need is a DT. And we should be able to find a capable rotational guy in FA once the dust has settled (Robertson?) as well as a solid guy with our 2nd round pick. Then the rest of the draft can be used to fill in our depth.

So while not flashy, what we are doing is all we need to do. There's no reason to think the team won't be fine next year.

I lol at your release peppers statement. I know it was in jest but what if you said...

RELEASE PEPPERS AND USE THE CAP SPACE TO BE A PLAYER IN FA BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO DIDEA WHAT MAY PRESENT ITSELF

..goes both ways...releasing him does not in any way lock us intosigning a scrub.

c'mon 55

Really thats a BIG IF. You will always have IFs on a team but we are banking on some big ones if what you said goes down.

I'd like to be one of the people who knows what the FO is doing. I want to know what they're planning, if they're not showing their cards outright and grabbing FAs then they're scheming. They know something we don't.

Also, Releasing Peppers will free up cap, but will you get someone of the value of Peppers from it? Draft, FA, these are all big IFs, we know what we got in Peppers.

If something is going to happen, it's going to happen on or before the draft.

i really dont believe the sky is falling, but i think what the problem is for me is talent level. how can we improve it? thats how teams get better, not signing EVERY free agent but ones that can improve the overall talent level, my problem is that the longer we have to wait the less talent will be avialable, and hoping someone gets released after the draft is not good strategy. a good team fills in with fa and the draft. we cannot fully rely on one or the other. also people keep forgetting we STILL dont have a 1st round pick and we pick in the BOTTOM of each round, again getting lesser talent. also we have to hope each one of these stick. our team has some holes , we are thin on dline, lewid just had shoudler surgery, we hope he comes back at full speed, we have 0 depth at oline which i think is the most important, since our offense is basically fueled by the run. we hope marshall steps up (which i think he will), but need depth at corner.

i just hope that maybe a combination of drafting and fa will help us out. We have to be better than last year.

and before people says that we were 12-4 last year, look at last years schedule. we beat a lot of bad teams barely by the way, split in our division(except for saints) and lost to the good teams and were undefeated at home. look at this years schedule, we play ONE team with a losing record. we play the nfc east and afc east, not to mention our own division which is always tough. i am not saying that we will be 0-16, but i am also not saying the we are some 12-4 juggernaut from last year and all we need to do for next year just draft some players and we will be dominant again.

i realize that we are broke, but the fo put themselves in this situation.

PS( for all those talking down fa like all of a sudden it is the worst thing to do, what happened in 2003 when we got one of the best fa pickups in stephen davis, maybe we should have waited for the draft, what was the fo thinking then? )

Quality teams get better by developing their own players. You do not have to brign in FA's to improve. We have young players that will continue to improve....Beason, Godfrey, Otah,Kalil, Dwill, Stewart.

Let me just address this...there's also a difference between trying to rebuild a team pretty much from scratch due to taking over from another regime like they were still doing in 2003, to how they handle things when they have a good core of players they handpicked like now. Then, getting Davis in FA was a great move because maybe they were thinking here's a guy who can give us a few years to carry the load/ be productive in a secondary role while we develop Foster. With the other needs they had, they may not have wanted to draft another RB high in 2003. They already had kind of a patchwork OL, so by signing Davis they got to draft a building block of their OL in Gross. OL generally last longer than RB. By no means am I saying this or any other FO is perfect, just trying to point out that they need to think differently at times.

How many of the 31 other NFL teams have actually made a big splash this year anyway? In case people haven't noticed, there really aren't any big name FA's out there, and nobody is really going on a spending spree this year, except for maybe the Redskins, and the majority of their money was spent on one player.

I only remember Fox/Hurney making a big splash in free agency one time, (Wahle & Lucas) and neither is still here...

I guess you could call Kemo a big one too, in more ways than one...

We also payed a far share for Jake and Steven Davis in 03. That seemed to work out.

    • Then don't tune in. It's really not a hard concept to understand, if your making your decision based on your own personal needs/feelings as opposed to what is best for the future of the franchise, then it's a you problem, not a Panthers problem. When the season is already lost, every fan should be rooting for the same thing.  The team plays hard until the final whistle of the season and keeps improving as a team and individually, but in the end, we still come up short and lose games, and preferably because the other team beat us, not because we screwed up and found a way to lose due to our own fault. Look at it this way... If we are up 1 or 2 points with 3 seconds left in the game and the other team is lining up for a FG.  Beyond the joy of victory or the disappointment of defeat, what impact does the other team making or missing the FG have on our team the following season? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING Except where we draft and what teams we play due to our finish in the division. The players and coaches on the team would have the exact same level of improvement and learnings about themselves individually and as a team whether the FG is made or missed.  The ONLY difference in the end is the record in the standings and if the win or loss number changes. If you want to argue if making the playoffs to lose in the first round or just missing them is better or worse, that's totally fair and I can at least understand the other side of it.  But in what is already a lost season, if you're not hoping your team plays well but ends up losing, then you're cutting off your nose to spite your face.  You're hoping for a moment of happiness at the detriment of the franchise's future, and in turn, you're basically then happy for a moment to only set yourself up for future further disappointment.
    • If we’re eliminated I want the wins more.   The season is already a disappointment and if I’m not pulling for wins why bother to tune in?
    • Two things terribly wrong with this post. First is that not one time has myself or anyone else agreeing with me said that the team themselves should think that way or try and lose for positioning.  Never once have I suggested the team should purposefully lose games, ever.  I honestly can't understand why people keep saying this in posts, not one fan has ever said the players should or would purposefully try to lose. And second, is yes, that has happened and it's happened very recently.  The 2020 Bengals were 4-11-1 and then were playing in the SB the very next season.   And while it might have been 2 years later and they didn't quite get to the SB, the 2021 Lions were 3-13-1 and then the 2023 Lions were up 24-7 at halftime of the NFC Championship game. The season between those two? They finished 9-8 and only just missed the playoffs. Which is why I keep trying to compare us to the Lions in where we are at in our re-build.  Throw out Bryce's rookie year with the Reich staff who just didn't work out and he looked god awful.   This past season when we were 5-12 in Canales' 1st season is that 2021 season for the Lions and their 1st season under Campbell.  This year is their 2022 where they grew a ton and Campbell's culture building was clear, where I'm saying we'd likely be better off in the long run if we go 8-9 or 9-8 and just miss out on the playoffs (which is still a significant improvement from last year).  Then our 2026 is their 2024 when we have a chance to be a real contender after adding a few more pieces and our key players having another year of experience under their belts.
