Preseason Impressions: The Quarterbacks

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

While Scott made a number of valid points, Newton will get the starting gig game 1 because he gives us the best chance to win.

My initial impression after game 3 was that we should go with Anderson. After re-watching the game and giving it more thought, I would go with Cam.

The game plan we saw in game 3 is not what we will see vs Arizona. Cam's mobility, along with more emphasis on the run game, more short thows to the TE's and backs, and only an occasional deep throw to keep defenses honest, seems a decent recipe for some success.

We are probably going to struggle for awhile no matter who starts, and as others have said, Cam seems to have the mental strength to deal with early adversity.

You also don't have the luxury of screwing up a #1 pick and not having it set your team back for years to come.

The Raiders were better off than we were last year and they busted on a #1 pick. I guess the Jake Delhomme, Matt Moore, finding a cheap vet QB to plug in because we were too scared to pull the trigger or not able to develop a young QB got us to where we are today.

I could easily say that I want the next best Ryan, or Flacco.

Jury's still out on those guys, even more so on Sanchez.

Flacco's playoff performances haven't exactly been shining moments.

But, you still did not answer their your perception of their rational.

We have a young quarterback to develop now. I'd prefer we do it right.

Reinforcing the bad habits he already has doesn't count as "development".

We already tanked one season. No since in doing it again. If were to have a shot in hell at winning any games this year then we need to Start Newton.

Here is hypothetical. Prefaced by Cam is a great athlete, Cam isn't a great QB. I would start DA and let Cam line up as a receiver, if he can catch he would be NASTY as TE or receiver.

Imagine the possibilities of Cam lined up with 89 what a conundrum that would create for defense

So you don't know? Or you don't understand the question?

Did you mean rationale?

My perception is that if they start him, they'll do so because they believe that's the best thing for his development. Based on what I see of him, I disagree.

Again, this is one of those where I hope they're right and I'm wrong, because all indications are they're throwing him into the fire from day one.

It would really suck going to the playoffs. 7-9 mentality

If just making the playoffs and then stinking in them is good enough for you, have at it. I want better than that.

Your way is wrong.

I actually hope it is, but we'll see.

I get the idea, but I honestly want Newton working full time on being a quarterback.

Oh yeah, sorry I did mean rationale, I forgot the e.

Forgive me, but I am going to take their word for it. They have worked with Cam from day one, and this is their job, as well as, their reputations at stake.

This is making me believe that being more accurate is something that is eventually going to come, and maybe he just needs to get more accurate with the mechanics he has, ie Brett Favre, Big Ben.

It seems that the most important thing to the team is getting this team behind Cam, and believing in him. Yes, I know it is important for Cam to be productive for him to looked at as a true leader, but maybe, in the beginning, those things are not mutually exclusive in the NFL. Obviously, eventually he is going to have to produce, but maybe he will get better as his confidence with the system grows.

A lot of NFL passers have quirks or a few bad habits, but it seems that when players play enough with them, they kind of work around them and use their talents to overcome them.

But, the thing about it is, Cam is going to struggle, rookies do, and when he has these struggles the people saying that Cam should be sitting are going to have their claims mistakenly validated because we are not going to know what Cam is capable of til next season anyways, but atleast he can learn a lot of things this season.

Please tell me you are just trolling for the fun of it.

It's not about being weak. It's about being thrust into a position that he is not prepared for, and ruining him.

Not much difference in starting him now vs. week 6.

I am not a big believer in ruining QBs.....either you got it or don't. Bust rate typically is the same regardless. Only difference is you see the learning curve on the Sundays vs. it being out of sight. I think QBs mature quicker playing on Sunday vs. the practice field.

OL, RB, and receiving options should be good enough to play a rookie and see if he is cut out for the NFL. It is suppose to be ugly early regardless.....
