Panthers beating the bushes

The Panthers are preparing like they've got a lot of picks, even though they have just five.

And judging by their travel plans, they're apparently thinking about something better than the 59th overall choice, the first one they have at the moment.

Already this week, they've eye-balled several first-round prospects. Monday, coach John Fox was at Georgia Tech to watch DE Michael Johnson, while GM Marty Hurney and new defensive coordinator Ron Meeks were at Utah to watch DE Paul Kruger and CB Sean Smith.

Those three figure to go anywhere from the late first to the early second round.

Tuesday, Hurney and O-line coach Dave Magazu were at Arkansas, where the Razorbacks have some interesting line prospects, led by C Jonathan Luigs.

I wonder just how good Michael Johnson really is.

I'm with you, he makes a great highlight reel, but there are definitely rumors of motor problems. Either way, we'd have to move up to get him, so I don't know if it's worth thinking too hard about...

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
