David Clowney waived, yet Armanti makes the team again?

I made this point elsewhere, but I think this deserves its own thread.

I want someone to come up with an argument that David Clowney deserved to be cut over Armanti Edwards based solely on their preseason play. Go ahead, I can't wait to read them.

And before you say "BUT BUT BUT ARMANTI'S CEILING IS THROUGH THE ROOOOOOOOF!!!!" I want you to point to something Armanti Edwards has done since he joined this team that points to him having any kind of high ceiling whatsoever. Don't use anything he did against teams like Elon either, only point to things he's done as a member of the Carolina Panthers.

He sucked last preseason, last regular season, and this preseason. So did Jimmy Clausen and Clausen is nearly universally reviled on this site now (and rightfully so). Why the double standard? The pick we traded for Armanti turned out to be the 33rd overall pick in 2011 draft, while Clausen was picked 48th in 2010. You know some players we could have selected with that 33rd pick this year? Cornerbacks like Marcus Gilchrist or Aaron Williams, both of which have torn it up this preseason. How about Da'Quan Bowers? Ugh, it just sickens me.

I will never understand all the love for Clowney on these boards. He was cut by Green Bay, he was cut by the Jets, and did not prove anything last year. If you watched Hard Knocks the special teams coach couldn't stand him on the Jets. Armatni hasn't played WR since High School, people are so impatient. It has been one season and Fox gave him not shot. Clowney is not good.

I don't "love" David Clowney, don't try to muddy my argument. I'm simply saying that he was CLEARLY better than Armanti Edwards was. That's all.

This is Armanti's year that his pick was used. He's had exactly one lameduck year to progress. Clowney has had one 4 years in the league and has done a whole lot of jack sh!t. Armanti has shown more flashes this preseason at two positions than Clowney has. Clowney caught one long pass against 3rd stringers whoopy.

    • There are several posters that only post negative at all times.   8 wins is a big jump from 5 and we still have 2 games.  Jaguars have a much more talented roster than us and have underachieved for years.
    • All of this noise is just setting us up to lose Week 18 and proclaim life's not fair. If there's one thing I know in my 30+ years of watching the Hornets and Panthers, is that the bad guy always wins in the end. A team can be falling apart internally but we will still lose to them. A team's fanbase can be extra shitty and cocky and they will just win anyway. It always happens
    • Well even if we took diverging paths getting there...our overall assessment of Shough is the same (bolded) lol so I guess that's what matters.  What you call "playing at a level that looks like a veteran starter" is the same thing I'm referencing when I talk about his poise.  Although I still wonder how truly "bad" of a team the Saints are.  Their defense is middle-of-the-road, and their offense does have some good pieces (Olave, Juwan Johnson) outside of running back which is the position most everyone agrees is relatively plug-and-play.  I'm not going to pretend to know anything about the majority of NFL team's o-lines lol but I'm assuming Saints are not great there, although Shough's pressure % seems to have been quite low (and steadily improving) over the last four weeks (20 -> 16.7 -> 15.0 -> 13.0) so maybe they've been playing better as of late, or perhaps Shough himself deserves credit for that.   Some of the language I'm hearing about Shough, including talking about how he's way above league average in several categories, makes it sound like Shough is having a rookie season on par with like a CJ Stroud who established himself as basically a Top 5-10 QB his rookie season.  Maybe that's on me though, I don't mean to attribute anything to you that I'm sure you don't agree with.
