WR corps: The annual elephant in the room

top dawg

WTF are we gonna do if Smitty gets hurt? We aren't looking all that different from last year. No legitimate, seasoned vet opposite of Smitty seems like the elephant in the room that just won't leave. And, every year we just gloss over it, much like the FO seems to do, until it rears its ugly head on Sundays. I hope the coaches know something about Naane & Ajirotutu that the stats don't speak to. We appear, yet again, one Steve Smith away from disaster. It's going to take more than Olsen/Shockey to be effective without Smith.

And again this coaching staff can only do so much in ONE season, Hurney likes to build his team through the draft, and it's already been rumored we went after WR's but, obviously they didn't want to be on a team with a starting Rookie QB, enough of the whining.

All I can say is make sure as hell you get Olsen on your fantasy team. I think they probably told Cam to try to spread the ball around in the preseason, but when the real games start and he's the only person open, he's going to put up monster numbers.

I think we will be okay thanks to Olsen and Shockey. Sounds like we may have also gotten a steal in Tutu.

If Cam can develop some chemistry with SS and continue finding the TE's in the open field, the team will be fun to watch (at least on offense). Screens plays have also looked good in the preseason and gives us something to build on.

We can get our number 2 receiver next year when Cam has enough experience to really spread the ball around.

I think we are okay offensively.

I'm pretty excited about Ajirotutu, but I also got really excited about Keyshawn and DJ Hackett and every other WR we've signed that was supposed to finally provide a balance across from Smith.

If we can get this defense straightened out before then I would love to use our #1 pick on a real WR prospect next year.

Nobody is whining.

Is it too much to ask to acquire someone who has actually started a full season, and not someone who is a WR4? Hurney likes to build through the draft, but he obviously does a piss poor job at scouting in this department. might be time to actually make a push for someone who is experienced. Rumors don't have to amount to anything.

I think we're OK offensively too, but if Smitty goes down all bets are off.

Maybe you don't like the WR's on the team, but perhaps the coaches and the people involved with the team feel that they have what it takes and are what the team needs.

Maybe they feel like Ajirotutu is that guy... I'm not too worried about it and I'm looking forward to see what the wr's on the team play on Sunday.

Edit: It's not like the team is really looking for a 2nd receiving threat. Who ever gets the 2nd WR spot is going to be 3rd or 4th on the progression list.

After watching film of Ajirotutu and Naanee, I feel confident that they will contribute. Olsen, Shockey takes pressure off the rest.. when both of 'em are out there on the field.

The last 6 years with the threat of possibly losing Smith has been worrisome every year for Panthers fans lol..it's nothing new.

    • How many QBs hit from any school?  I've seen these arguments a lot but honestly so few even hit that it looks bad for most.  Recent history on UNC for example, Mitch bust, and Howell was at one time a 1st rounder dropped to 5th and is now on his 3rd team, so maybe the Pats shouldn't have drafted Maye?  Nah you never scout the school.  Even the ones you mentioned are outliers in their own schools.  Baker was dominated for a pretty dominate school, but I can't think of many Oklahoma QBs aside from him.  It takes so much for these guys to find success.  Clemson had Watson and then he fell off mentally, Lawrence isn't living up to his hype, Cade is struggling before he is even drafted, Whitehurst and Boyd never did anything, and Dantzler had to change positions.
    • Not gonna start a thread on this but AJ Brown seems pretty unhappy. I wonder if they lose a few games if they’d be willing to listen to an XL trade + a pick for AJ. Opens up cap space for them, and I do think XL could have a really solid role on that offense. TMac + AJ would be a top 5 WR corp
    • I gotta disagree with this. Shaq was a very good LB. He just stood in the shadows of two greats.  And this team has felt his loss from the injuries and now his moving on. We were better against the run with him here.
