Only 3 DTs = 3-4 Defense Sunday?

It will be interesting to see what we do Sunday with just 3 DT's on the roster... we have to sign somebody (or two) before Sunday... no way we go into a game with only 3 DT's on the roster.

Johnson can move inside on passing downs giving us 4 guys who can help out. Will we pick up someone else? I think so in the next week or so.

Beanie had no 100 yard games last year and had one good preseason game where he ran for 65 yards against SD. Still Arizona doesn't run much at all. With Kolb they will be passing short and often. If Wells get over 100 yards we will lose the game plain and simple. Because we will stopped nothing at all. We need to shut down the running game so we can force them to be one dimensional and allow the blitz to work.

If we can keep Beanie under 100 yds I'll be AMAZED!

Did u not watch the first half of all preseason games?

I know it is very, very, very unlikely. But if we do come out in some from of 3-4 defense on Sunday you guys are going to owe me and Panther81 an apology. :cuss:

If we go to only rushing 3 linemen and playing the nickel on passing downs, it isn't the same as a 3-4. Just sayin..............

We will stay a 4-3 base but could bring a norwood who could stand up and cover or rush the passer. That would give you the normal responsibilities of a 4-3 with the versatility of a 3-4. Still I think we need to stop the run so I would want at least 4 linemen and at times possibly a linebacker on the line as well. Unless Arizona opens up with 4 and 5 receiver sets. Of course with 5 receivers the backfield will be empty. But they could go with 4 wides and still put Wells back there. It would definitely spread out the defense and make it much harder to blitz. Our defensive line would need great gap control and be sure tacklers to avoid big holes in the secondary.

We need to bring pressure most of all. Kolb is not great under pressure and could begin hearing footsteps if we got to him early. Any weaknesses in the secondary would be less of an issue if Kolb had to throw in less than 3 seconds all day.

I thought Rivera said we would be showing some 3-4 this year? And now you guys act like it is the craziest fugging thing you've ever heard. :nonod:

If we are going to show it at times, surely we have been implementing certain concepts from the beginning.

I don't disagree that that we may not have the personnel at this time to do it, but judging from what we have seen to date it doesn't seem like we have the personnel for a 4-3 either.

I'm not saying they'd change it for good or anything just trying to figure out what they are trying to do to compensate for their lack of DTs. They said they were going hybrid 3-4 right? When did they plan to install the formations? Week 16?

they are going to line up, after a good week of practice, and try to execute the best they can, without a lot of rotation.

But to play your theory game, the other guard they just signed will play the nose tackle. How ya like that bs theory.

Insert Facepalm Pic Here...

Do you understand how different the gap assignments are for the front 7 in a 4-3 as opposed to a 3-4? It's like night and day. No way the coaching staff would waste a week of practice just to change the defense for one week. Not to mention our personnel isn't even closed to equipped to it. No NT, CJ can play an end in a 3-4 skillset wise(albeit a bout 25 lbs too light), but no one else can play the other end. Hardy isnt big enough to hold double's for long enough to let the LB's make a play, and Norwood is even smaller. Not to mention about 85% of ur pass rush comes from ur OLB's, and while I think TD and Anderson are GREAT 4-3 olb's, they have very very little in game experience rushing the passer from the edge. Give even kevin kolb more time than the abundance he probably will already have this weekend, he will look like dan freaking marino against our secondary.

If you didn't feel like reading that then here is the abridged version: It would be moronic to run a 3-4 for 1 week. That is all.
