Godfrey Extended

And I've been one of the hardest people on this board towards Godfrey his first few years... That being said, he has absolutely improved every year. IMO he improved exponentially after we drafted Martin and especially after Martin, as a rookie, played for him while he was injured.

Also, for everyone talking him down right now... You should also keep in mind that he was playing on the same side of the field for the majority of the season as Richard Marshall, who was technically one of the worst, if not THE WORST, starting CB in the NFL last year. If Captain or Butler is any kind of upgrade at all, Godfrey is gonna look much better in coverage.

Joe Person just now reporting this in.

Why does this guy always act like he's first on the scene?

News has been out for an hour, but the dude acts that just because he's the official mouthpiece for the organization that it isn't "official" until he says it is.

He was on the plane going to AZ.

Not everybody follows 20 sources for their "breaking" panther news.

VVV edit for clarification because it needs no more derailing; he's doing his job. Whether he's late or not, he has to report it because one may depend solely on him for news. don't get the butthurt over twitterfood, i'm pretty sure it involves no ego.

Wow. Didn't see this coming.

Glad it's done. That's damn good contract for the Panthers.

This is such a heavily debated subject.

Is godfrey elite? There isnt 5 elite safeties in the game. He also iisn't being piad as if he's a top safety in the game. he plays consistently better than Minter did, which is more than good enough for me. He is still improving. With better cb play, he'll be even better.

Good move, another solid piece locked up.

Don't agree with the extension. Good hitter, but think he lacks in coverage. Which is the main job of a DB. Others may like it, but I'll just shake my head and just accept it and hope he finally shows improvement this season. To me, this is the equilivant of extending Delhomme after the Arizona game.

That's silly. The two don't come close.

Shockey, Derek Anderson, Naanee, Geoff Schwartz, Dan Connor, Mackenzy Bernadeau. That's about the extent of their pending UFAs in '12.

per Gantt.

I honestly would like to see Shockey brought back, even though I doubt it happens if Barnidge's

recovery goes well. I just like the attitude he brings. I didn't know Connor was going to be a FA next year, he needs to be traded as soon as Beason gets to one hundred percent health. There's no way the guy resigns here after this season, so get what you can out of him. A solid spare DT any team has would be nice.

Shockey is too injury prone.

I feel Godfrey plays very well in under coverage when the receiver is in front of him, but when he has to play a Deep Zone and is left a lone in space sometimes I'm like, "hey Godfrey, what you doing out there bro?"

He is actually a good tackler and stout against the run although he will always be cursed by the time he got absolutely trucked in that Browns game. People will look to that and assume he is weak.

He did play a different position in college so maybe its going to be a Thomas Davis thing and things will start clicking and suddenly he will look like a superstar.

I feel like the extra INTs he got this year were more errant throws or bobbled catches than anything Godfrey did. I still think Martin is the better Football player.

Roman Harper made the probowl last year and he is actually horrible so maybe good coverage safties are just really hard to come by these days.

    • Sometimes it's nice to get an outside perspective on things we are emotionally invested in. NYT/Athletic did a midway breakdown of every teams' biggest offseason acquisitions. Here's our part: Notable additions: Nikolaj Ehlers ($8.5 million x six years), K’Andre Miller (acquired in exchange for a conditional 2026 first-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick and Scott Morrow) Early return: It took the Hurricanes some time to find Ehlers’ ideal lineup fit. He began the season on a line with Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis, but that combination didn’t really click, with their marquee signing registering just four points in his first 11 games. Since then, though, Ehlers has settled in and found his groove. The dynamic, speedy Danish winger has scored 27 points in his last 31 games. He initially built chemistry with Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake, but with Jarvis’ injury, he’s been bumped back up to the top line with Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, with this new-look trio clicking impressively. Ehlers’ game-breaking puck-carrying ability has added an exciting new dimension to Carolina’s rush attack. He’s been a consistently dangerous play-driver (Carolina’s controlled 60 percent of scoring chances during his five-on-five shifts) and I’d argue his point production has actually undersold his impact on Carolina’s offense. Ehlers has collected a point on just 52 percent of the five-on-five goals he’s been on the ice for — he’s been snakebitten and has deserved to pick up a few more assists. I’m also still a fan of Carolina’s expensive bet on Miller. Yes, he’s made occasional mistakes and has been narrowly outscored during his five-on-five minutes despite his strong underlying metrics, but context is important. Miller was supposed to lead Carolina’s second pair, but Jaccob Slavin’s injuries (he’s only played five games this season) have forced him to take on a larger top-pair role. That’s meant eating a career-high 22:35 per game and handling some of the toughest matchups of all NHL defensemen. Miller has held his own in this daunting role, and I’d expect his performance to level up once Slavin’s return allows him to settle into the second-pair slot he was actually acquired to fill.
    • Cam better be wandering up and down the sidelines as an honorary hype man/coach through the entire game Give Cam the halftime show (Cam IS the halftime show) Don't just roll him out with the drum and have that be it
