NFL.com Peppers/Patriots *possible* update

U gotta consider the 17 million dollars moving Peppers brings us as well. If Pep would sign his contract like Cassel did and we moved him we could have signed TJ Houshmandzadeh, Bryan Dawkins, and still have 6 million dollars of extra cap space and the 2nd pick in the 2nd round as well. The world doesn't end if we don't get two #1s for Peppers.

Peppers really fugged us by coming out saying he didn't want to pay here blah, blah, blah. If he'd kept his trap shut, signed his Franchise tag contract, we could be shopping Peppers to whatever teams he speciifed with a stronger bargaining position.

pep's agent may be seeing the light.

Carey, who said after the season that Peppers would not play for the Panthers ever again, seemed to soften that stance.

“While Julius is interested in the Patriots and a few other teams in the league, he is comfortable with the position he’s in right now,” Carey told the Boston Herald. “In the event we are unable to reach an agreement (with another team), Julius will be among the highest paid defensive players next season, and we will be comfortable with that. We’re not in a position where we have to act hastily.”

That is certainly in contrast to what Carey told Carolina Growl on Jan. 17 when he said, "Julius has given a huge portion of his career to the Carolina Panthers and he feels that he has done all that he can do there and this is more about him trying it another way. For him that means trying it outside of the Carolina Panthers organization."

And when asked in a follow-up question if Peppers does not, under any circumstance, want to come back to Carolina, Carey said, "Right. He's ready to move on."

Is the reason he hasn't signed his tender is he's hoping for a release? That's too Silly.

No, if he signs the tender then we can negotiate a trade.

Even though he would really have to agree to a long-term contract with any prospective trade partner (no team would offer anything of value for a $17M 1 yr contract), it would give the Panthers more control.

Nothing to be gained by him signing at this point.

“I don’t think that’s a good way to do business,” Belichick said to WEEI about an agent-brokered transaction. “I personally would not do it that way. I think if a player wants to be traded or wants to be in a position where he could be traded, then the best thing for that player to do is do what Matt Cassel did — sign the tender, be under contract, and then go to the team and say, ’Okay, I don’t want to be here, trade me, this is where I want to go.’”
i can't stand the guy but he makes great sense here.

still think carucci needs to find better sources. panthers aren't going to let him go for just a 2nd round pick. dude is just trying to save face. he said that the two teams have been in talks and both teams refuted that, pats saying that they haven't even talked with peppers and pep's agent saying that he hasn't spoken with the pats.

carucci....quickly becoming a joke.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
