What is our biggest position of need?

As of now? It's pretty hard to tell. The biggest question to me is DT, will one of these two rookies that we spent 3rds on pan out (consistent starter quality play)? Another big ? is Gettis...will he still be the upcoming stud he was after a year of no play for someone who only had a year to begin with? Smitty is getting older and if no one else steps up WR is going to be a HUGE issue with our new stud QB. Then comes the DBs...Gamble and Captain are enough to win games. Depth is the huge concern here, mainly because of health issues. If Gamble starts to go downhill CB will be a bigger hole than DT and it isn't smart to rely on one guy like that. Then there is the gigantic OLB hole left by Davis....

Way too little info to really know just yet but I understand you're just looking for a discussion :). If today were the day to draft it'd be DT, WR, LB or CB. That's my 2 cents, but first couple picks should be best talent at one of those rather than strictly need.

Replacement for Smitty, a true #1. Unless we're going to let Greg Olsen take that role ala Wesley Walls.

There's Cornerback, somewhat, it's glaring at times.

Defensive Tackle, Need Run stoppage and Pressure through the middle.

Offensive Tackle, IF Otah doesn't finish this year out. I'm sorry, you've been hurt for most of your career.

Linebacker, Thomas Davis isn't coming back from this. I wish he would but it's the 3rd time...

All hinges on gettis, if he comes back and isnt the same, then WR is my num 1. I think dt, cb and olb are cobbled together. I think with the 2 dts we have, in combo with ron edwards will be a solid rotation, our cbs are good for now, I think butler and hogan have the potential to be starters. Olb is a need but in terms of the impact olb has, its one of the lesser positions on def in terms of importance of having a star.

Also looking to the future, with otahs injury issues amd jordan gross not getting any younger, tackles have to be a need in the near future.

    • There's only two paths to that happening. First is that Theilen misses a significant chunk of the season, the other is that XL and Coker both either flop or have injuries themselves. I love the pickup of Renfrow as I think he'll be great in the locker/film room for all the young guys while giving us a natural replacement of Thielen in the WR room next year to be the wiley old vet in the room. But he has almost no path to getting snaps this year unless the guys ahead of him have injuries or just suck.  Assuming he makes he squad, he's more likely to be inactive more often than he's active on game days.   And he's not the best route runner on the team, that's still Thielen, who even at this point in his career is still one of the better route runners in the league.
    • I'll go ahead and say it because the average poster is too scared to say it.  Hunter Renfrow is the best route runner on the team.  He will catch more balls than a couple of those dudes added together.  It's Short King season!   Get on the wagon while there are still seats available!
    • But that's the WR4 this year, we only have one year left of Thielen. If Coker has injury issues and/or regresses and shows why he went undrafted, unless Horn ends up REALLY living up to the minicamp hype, we'd actually end up in need of another good WR option next offseason again. I love the potential of T-Mac, XL, Coker, Horn as our 1-4 next year and into the future. And while I of course have a million percent belief that T-Mac is going to be that guy for us, it's still a big year for the rest of the WR room to prove we're set at the position for the foreseeable future once Thielen is gone after the season.
