The NFL should issue a public apology to the Panthers.

It is illegal to launch into a defenseless reciever (hit w/ your helmet). it is not illegal to hit a runner with your helmet. Smith wasn't in the process of making a catch (defenseless). There are rules that apply to defenseless recievers and QBs.....that do NOT apply when the QB or WR are "runners".

I guarantee he doesn't get a fine for that.

It's hard to tell, smith barley got his head turned around i don't think smith could of done anything more then he did to avoid that hit, and that is the definition of a defenseless receiver soooo he might or might not get fined who knows...

If smith got hurt that play, he most def would have got fined though.

even if Carolina sends that play in.....the fact Smitty broke basically 2 tackles and went an additional 4-5 yards when that helmet hit occured pretty much proves he wasn't a defenseless reciever

we are talking about the wrong play

not talking about the one where smith bounced off that tackle like a champ

The biggest tell tale sign is when the flags come out late.

Big play, blown dead, 10 to 15 seconds later a flag comes out for illegal procedure or some phantom hold, and it's called back. But there are almost never flags on lousy plays.

Yea there's never a flag when we run for 2 yards are for no gain or on a sack, but let us bust a big run ala Stewart versus Green Bay or a Touchdown ala Olsen versus Green Bay, or Shockeys TD today here comes the flags.

It's almost gotten to the point that doing certain momentum shifts during a game I can predict when a flag is about to come. I'm definitely questioning the legitimacy of the NFL these past few weeks.

Thats why you go public with it. NFL hate when that happens, but hey if nothing is being done you gotta found someway to get your point across

NFL isn't the NBA. Everybody has a chance any given sunday

That's one of my biggest issues, is that they only throw flags on big plays. It's like they're scared to let anything happen.

Ahh man I know. It's so fuging irritating because it's the biggest plays that get overturned. Seems for the SAKE OF ENTERTAINMENT this wouldn't be the case. Time to go check into anger management cuz i'm pissed.

You're confused. The defenseless receiver part doesn't even apply here. Stevie Wonder could see that he was using his helmet as a weapon and that is always illegal.

He will be fined.

"Watching the Bears vs Panthers, I am a fan of both teams so there is no bias attached to my concern.

You must review the play in which Jeremy Shockey catches a 22 yd touchdown pass from Cam Newton. After replay there was no obvious foul on the play and the late flag is thrown only after the result of the play is a touchdown.

"Keeping it close" totally messes up the honesty that we believe should be the backbone of NFL officiating. When referees are winning games instead of the teams on the field the NFL can count themselves among the WWF and other scripted "sports".

The Panthers have had this problem with game changing late flags for a couple weeks and it is becoming obvious. Protect your brand! Keep Vegas off the field."

That is what I wrote to the NFL earlier.

Again, hitting a runner with your helmet is different from spearing. There's a world of difference in a facemask hitting the side of the helmet or something while tackling and spearing. He ducked his helmet, creating a straight line from the crown of the helmet down his spine (creating the "spear") and drove into Smitty's helmet. That's never legal, defenseless or not.

You can hit a runner with your helmet. It happens in every game, every week.

Smith was no longer "defenseless reciever"......he was a runner. Different rules then apply on how you can hit him.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
