Gantt: Delhomme here to stay

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I like(d) Cutler, Leftwich, Cassell, Anderson, Moore, McCown, Kitna, etc.

The fact remains that its hard to get much worse than Jake at this point.

That's exactly the same thinking that people used to support the cries for Chris Weinke and David Carr to take over.

How'd that work out?

Yeah it was the way he worded it. He doesn't know if the extension is because the team really wants him to stay as long as possible or if it was mostly because of cap space. Who knows? Thats his opinion. Stating his opinion and then using that lunatic fringe comment is what I had a problem with.

Again, because unlike people on this board, he actually talks to the people involved.

He's in a fantastically better position to talk about what the organization believes than any of us. And he's not the lone voice. Chandler and Reed have made similar comments before.

Thinking that we as fans who have no direct involvement with the organization can know more than the people who do? "Irrational" would be a pretty good description.

Crolls:

Ahhhh..so it's kind of what I said in the other thread...some of our being called "nuthuggers" is mainly due to the fact we like the type of QB/team model Fox does, and some of the the people who call us "nuthuggers" want some exciting big armed huge passing #s 1st round elite guy with some 1999 Rams type offense.

I don't care whether a guy or a position is "TOO" vanilla. In fact, I much prefer "vanilla" to a TO type. Nor do I care about a QB having to be the "face of the franchise". Neither of those things is important to winning football games, IMO, so why would I spend time wanting it?

I think you misunderstand me a little and that is prob. my fault.

I despise TO types as well. and I don't mind the Fox philosophy. My point is that you don't need the best but you do need someone that you don't continually h ave to make excuses for when he lets you down.

This guy isn't the best and does not have to be the best in a Fox system. but he does have to be better thatn he has been and he does have to be more consistent. he can't have a huge chip on his shoulder and he can't have a "win it all back with one heave" mentality.

Jake just is NOT the guy. The only part of the Fox philosophy that he fits is that he is NOT one of the best QB's in the league. Part of being a game manager is making the simple throw across the middle when its necessary and not having to wait until the second half for the accuracy to show up once nerves have been settled. how many times has that guys started us off in a hole over the years?

We need a dink and dunker that can air it out one to two times a game on first to keep guys honest. He is just too inconsistent to do that when called on.

Nothing surprising here, we all knew this. Some didn't want to admit it, but we all knew this was the case. He's got this next season to show what he can do, to show that his inconsistency last year from game to game was indeed because of the TJ surgery which it's known to cause inconsistency problems. So he's got another shot, need to go ahead and get over it and face the facts that Delhomme is Carolina's QB for the foreseeable future.

Well if the organization really is going to do this for the reason that they actually want him here as long as possible more so than just free up cap space, they are insane. But then again, what organization is gonna right out say "Well, we just signed our starting QB so that we have more money to spend" ? Part of a coach's job is to raise morale, not lower it. So you won't hear that. Instead you'll hear more so along the lines of "He's our guy and we're gonna stick with him. He just had one bad game. It is what it is". That's ok and that's what Gantt has to work with. But you gotta think that if the organization really is committed to improving our team and making it better, that they have to be looking at options for that position. But that's my opinion and Gantt has his and he has to realise that although some fans can be "irrational", there are good reasons why much of the fan base does not like Delhomme.

Very logical post. The Broncos reported that 10 teams contacted them in regard to trading for Cutler. Some on here are just wanting to hear the Carolina is one of those teams just so they can have the piece of mind that the team is trying to get better at the QB position. But what would they accomplish by making this announcement? Apising the fans. But then your current starting QB who you want to sign to an extension to help save cap space get upset that you are trying to trade for a new starter and failed an all of a sudden you have no chance at creating that cap relief.

Carolina could have been one of those 10 teams. But it would be foolish on their part to say anything other than Jake is our man and the starter for the foreseeable future.

We hear the phrase "cap move" all the time. Teams aren't shy about it. It's even been said about prior restructures by Delhomme.

That's the same irrational thinking I pointed out from another poster a while ago.

Believing that they "aren't committed to improving" just because they aren't making the moves you think they ought to make is just silly.

They're committed to improving. They're committed to winning. They have to be unless they have some secret desire to be unemployed. Disagreeing with you and other fans on how to go about that is not a sign to the contrary.

Yeah, but coaches aren't going to right out say that was the main reason why.

I can only hope they are.

If anything, that should show you how terrible this FO is at getting QB's.

It's not the fans fault they loaded the team up with scrubs.

Jake being the best out of that group is like winning the special Olympics, how can you be proud of that?

I get what you are saying...but I think I differ on the "let down all the time " thing...because I don't and never have thought of him as a "carry the team on your back every week" guy. I have always viewed him more as a link in a chain. If I were of the opinion that the team should go the route of a guy who could "carry the team", I would be more inclined to feel that an average to above average QB is not the answer and that he was letting the team down every week. This is not an EXCUSE, but the fact is that he has had throwing arm issues which hurt his already unorthodox mechanics for at least 4 seasons running...and I would like to see how he does this year when those issues should be less prevalent if not eliminated altogether. I can't argue that he needs to become more consistent, but I think this will help him be that. You seem more skeptical of that. We don't know either way yet.

I am not sure if you mean that they need to change the offense or not because this offense is, of course, not currently a dink and dunk offense. If you mean you want him to check down more often, I would agree. The RBs need to be more involved in the passing game.
