If Chud stays, do you think we will ever be able to...

do you think that the NFL isn't changing?

It is, but even Ryan Grant and James Starks have more combined carries than Stewart and Williams. On top of that Cam has attempted more passes than two of the three guys ahead of him in yards in Brady and Rogers. People are starting to group Cam into the superstar quarterback ranks after seven games.

We still need to run the ball.

Has everyone forgotten that just a few years ago Williams and Stewart both ran for 1,100 yards?

Actually Cam Cameron was only there 1 year for that group, the 14-2 year.

After that they fired Marty, both offensive (Cam) and defensive (Wade) coordinators left for HC jobs, lost Michael Turner to Atlanta, Merriman got busted for roids, LT and Cromarite regressed big time until both were let go and went to the Jets.

They were dominant that year, it took some profoundly stupid play to lose to the pats that year in the playoffs.

Cam was there from 2002-2006 as the OC. Michael Turner spent 3 of his 4 years in SD with Cameron as the OC before Norv Turner ever got there. But anyway, a balanced run/pass attack during SD's best year and LT's MVP year was more about Marty Schottenheimer and had nothing to do with coaches who weren't even in SD at the time.

we don't need our RBs to run for 1100 yards each in a season. we need them to run well when we need them to.

the run game got off to a slow start this year...just like it does every year. people make too big a deal about it.

oline takes several weeks to gel. the fact that we are just now getting to a consistent starting 5 is something to look at. we weren't running the ball often because we weren't running the ball well.

we've gotten to a point where we can run the ball effectively. we still won't see us running the ball as often as we did a couple years ago. we will just be incredibly effective when we do.

if/when newton hits his rookie wall, we'll be glad that we have these two guys and that their mileage is still kind of low that late in the season, esp. if we have even the slightest chance at the playoffs.

Has it been forgotten that this isn't that team or coaching staff anymore? I love running as much as any football fan, but I am happy with the offense and the way we're moving the ball, that year was the exception as IIRC it's the ONLY time two HB's went for over 1,000 yards.

As time continues I'm sure we'll see more carries, but like mentioned before that will be more so once we have the lead. We're a pass first team that CAN run, in today's NFL that's something to be happy about.

Sadly if would be smart to deal JStew while he is still under contract and we can get something for him. I don't think we will ever run the ball as much as we use to and we have other positions that are more of a need. Plus, we will never be able to re-sign him.

we can make other positions stronger without having to resort to trading away strengths.

I haven't read this whole thread, but i recall earlier in the year rivera talking about how he was making cam throw more to get more familiar with the offense so that when they needed to rely on him to take over games in the future, he'll be more confident with the plays being called and the offense he'll need to run. kind of a trial by fire mentality. Rivera knew we have a proven commodity in the backfield with stewart and williams, so he didn't emphasize them as much at first.

I could be completely wrong though

How? When Stew's contract comes up he will either want to get paid or go elsewhere. I think he is real happy here but at some point he will want $ and no way he settles for less b/c he is buds with DW. Would be nice to get something for him while we can. We can't have a ton of money tied up in running backs and throw the ball 40 times a game.

I just don't see us ever running the ball enough where we need to top tier running backs.

Keep Stew deal D.Wills.

On the original post I think as an OC you gotta go with what is working in the scheme. You can't just keep pounding the rock for 2 yrds when you have a high powered QB and great WR's/TE's that we now have. You don't play to the weaknesses you play to the strengths and right now our passing game is our strength. This isn't the blocking/coaching scheme of Fox (THANK GOD FOR THAT), so if you would like to see more balance go get a The Golden Calf of Bristol jersey and root for the Broncos.
