Sometimes the best way to deal with a blown season packed full of moral victories is to think about that bright future that keeps us panther fans sane through out this year.

So lets discuss both need and fit.

We NEED a playmaker on defense. I say we look for a versatile ILB/OLB who can spell Davis, and move inside when we give the occasional 3-4 look.

Who I like here:

2195574.jpeg ALA LB Dont'a Hightower

Dont'a Hightower is a returning captain and a leader of the Crimson Tide's vaunted defense that ranks in the top five nationally in the five major categories, including first in scoring defense (7.0 ppg), first in total defense (184.14 ypg), first in rushing defense (38.14 ypg) and fifth in pass defense (146.0 ypg) ... leads the team with 40 tackles, including 20 solo stops ... has half of a sack and 5.0 tackles for loss (-19 yards) ... also has three quarterback hurries ... started all seven games at mike linebacker ... can also moves to the outside on passing downs to rusher the passer ... a leading candidate for All-America honors and the Butkus Award, which goes to the nation's top linebacker ... a three-time UA coaching staff player of the week ... has at least five tackles in six of seven games this season. Kent State: Second on the team in tackles with seven ... had four solo tackles and half of a sack for minus-four yards ... registered one quarterback hurry in the Tide's 48-7 win. Penn State: Had four tackles in the Tide's win over the No. 23 Nittany Lions ... was credited with an additional quarterback hurry in the coach's tape. North Texas: Had five tackles with three solo stops in the 41-0 shutout of the Mean Green ... had a season-best two tackles for loss (-6 yards) and one quarterback hurry as the Tide limited UNT to 169 total yards and just 68 yards rushing ... earned Defensive Player of the Week honors from the UA coaching staff. Mississippi: Recorded five tackles and half of a tackle for loss (-1 yard) against the Rebels ... helped UA record 14 tackles for loss as a team ... had his third quarterback hurry of the season as the Tide held UM to 141 total yards and just 28 rushing yards.

Torn his ACL in his sophomore but has played two healthy seasons since. Gotta love his size and would also be a big time impact player.

I don't think we draft a CB with the top pick, and with Edwards hopefully coming back with the rookies, I think you gotta give them more time. LB is the biggest need IMO.

And for you geniuses talking about do I keep up with Davis and how his career is over. Notice how all the prospects are LBs? Connect any dots lately? smh..

Edwards won't make much of an impact, torn triceps is pretty serious for a DT. Especially at his age.

First things first.

3-4 or 4-3

Best option is to trade down as we are again top 5 pick

This.

This is a top heavy draft quarterback wise and we may have a very valuable pick. If we can trade-rape a team like the Browns did the Falcons, we could solve a lot of problems this draft.

defensive line should be no.1 priority and it's not even close

LB is already deep with seniors. CBs won't help us pressure the passer better

Who do you like on the DL? Point of making the thread was for constructive discussion, and this is an obvious weakness of the team. I think we have good young DEs and we need to give the young DTs a little more time to develop. The plan was for Ray Edwards to buy those two sometime, but they've been thrown into the fire. I still think its possible they could improve to NFL starter caliber players. But when you look at LB, after Beason and Anderson, you have Davis(whose career may be over), Conner(underwhelming depth player) Gaither(aging journey man), the 2 Williams (neither are anything close to every down backers) and Phillips (who hasn't shown a heck of a lot so far) We need to add talent at this position as there is no hope for next year outside of getting Beason back.
