Penn State...what did Paterno know?

To me, this pretty much sums up what Paterno (and McQuery) were thinking when all this happened:

"I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care," the legendary coach said. "I have the same goal today.

Sure. But it is critical to know exactly what Paterno was told. The decision matrix between "send it up the ladder" and "immediately call the cops" is completely dependent on what was conveyed to him.

Hey he told the guy (Schulz) who ran the campus police. And these are real police with real authority.

In addition McQuery told him (Schulz) specifically that it was anal rape (Paterno wasn't there.)

The real question with regard to Paterno is what actions he took in the years afterwards when nothing was done. What was he told by his bosses, did he push for things.

Keep in mind the police were told of another incident with Sandusky and did nothing with it.

No question that we don't know exactly what was said, only what has been produced by this grand jury, but it all seems pretty damning to me...

Even if he did tell campus police, which are in fact, "real police" as you say... he had a moral responsibility to see it thru further than that... if you KNEW a guy was caught raping a young boy... even in the admin and police did nothing, you still have a responsibility to get that guy away from your program.

Those admins and police that were told, and did nothing should also be severely punished.

Oh don't get me wrong, this is a massive fug-up damn near across the board. I'm just pointing out that this is like the Kitty Genovese murder. (except in this case they really didn't do anything)

I'd still love to hear his story.

From Rick Reilly's new article:

Imagine: Victim One, according to the Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News, was often taken out of class by Sandusky to be further molested. Just taken out of school by somebody who wasn't his parent, with no questions asked until his mother finally called the principal and asked her to check into it. Later that day, the principal called back in tears. "You need to come down here right now."

Joe was told the day after McQueary alerted him he had witnessed the rape. The details are pretty brutal and much more descriptive than what Paterno supposedly told Curley. If JoePa was only able to relay a message that Sandusky was being accused of "something of a sexual nature," at the very minimum he was withholding information and may have been indirectly tampering with the investigation.
