Gruden to talk about Cam Pre-Season and Now on ESPN...

Well this is nice and all, but honestly I've never heard Gruden say anything bad about anyone for as long as he's worked at ESPN. He's the most overwhelmingly positive commentator I've ever heard :p

We all know that Cam knew his own offense and that the Gruden segment is meaningless, but Cam DID blow that interview. Gruden didn't ask an unfair question, HE might have known what Auburn's playcalling scheme but Gruden didn't do these things just to get a better understanding of Auburn, he's not a scout he works for ESPN.

He wanted Cam to explain to America what his playcalling scheme was, and Cam didn't do a good job at all. Luckily that doesn't matter on the field.[/QUOTE]

So why didn't he do it with all the other rookie QBs...

He wanted to "expose" Cam's playcalling scheme, Cam answered the question correctly, the answer was "36" which stood in stark contrast to the "X right slot, Z wing, blah, blah blah..." NFL playcall that Gruden gave him. It brought the show a lot of attention which is Gruden's primary job as a TV personality.

I just think it's funny that he now says the whole "36" thing wasn't a big deal, when he's the one that made it a big deal to begin with.

I'm sure he did. He's with these QBs for several hours and it gets edited into a 20 minute video. Actually I do remember him asking some other QBs about their playcalling.

He then gave Cam a chance to explain what 36 was and draw it up but he didn't. And how is he the one making a big deal of it? He doesn't edit the things himself.

I don't think that makes Cam dumb and clearly it doesn't affect his ability to comprehend a playbook but he didn't do that part of the interview well at all. The rest of his QB Camp went fine and IIRC Gruden praised him after it was aired.

while I do think some is poor playcalling, that has improved lately. A lot of that is also the length of drives due to field position.

I like how it has evolved. Putting in a lot of these read options in the red zone are proving to be very productive and I think we will continue to grow those packages.

i've heard many players say the playbook they have now is the largest, most complex thing they've ever seen; and Cam still isn't allowed to use a wristband. I can imagine when he misses wildly or struggles on a couple drives that not everyone is on the same page as to what play was being called..

This is *exactly* why Legs is so important, and what the vast majority of fans miss about the role he is playing in this offense.

There's only so much that on-the-field leadership makes up for terrible play, sure, but he's been much better in recent weeks than the start of the season. His dropped ball at the end of the game was bad, but meh, he also had some nice plays.

how was Cam supposed to elaborate on"36"? like Oregon and several other schools, Auburn gets their plays from flash cards on the sidelines. it was clearly a loaded question. most of the viewers wanted to see Cam painted as someone that was too dense to learn an NFL offense and Gruden gave them what they wanted to see.
