Connor doesn't have a nose for the ball like Beason, simple as that. If you're an IDP fantasy nerd like me, it's crazy when you compare the numbers and see how much less production we get out of the MLB position when Connor starts. It also doesn't hurt that Conner doesn't wrap up a tackle as well, Conner is a good back-up but not a starting caliber MLB. :(

OK, I was talking to boo about this exact thing yesterday... take a look at it.

The video is here:

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-fantasy/09000d5d8240fc2b/D-Titans-79-yd-punt-return-TD

Connor makes a bee-line down the side line... that leads me to believe that he had responsibility for that side line.

Note the giant hole in coverage BEHIND Connor...

Connor is circled in blue, our two cover guys in red are being blocked and the two guys in orange are too far away.

In the next second...

Connor is running full out, and has to stop and change direction 90 degrees to hit the guy... I doubt there are many players that can do that. If Connor is guilty of anything it's being out of position, but again, I think he had sideline responsibility and was counting on the other guys to cover inside. He probably should have angled away from the sideline a bit towards the returner as he was catching the ball and force him to the outside.

The problem looks to me just like really, really poor coverage. Look at that giant hole behind Connor.

Also, maybe Baker didn't get the punt high enough... he kicked it roughly 60 yards which is a pretty damn good punt, but you've got to kick it high enough to give the coverage guys time... it's honestly hard to say from the video. Based on my calculations, it was roughly 4.5 seconds of hang time... which I believe is about average.

Overall, I think the issue is with the coverage team, not with Baker... and it wasn't Connor all by himself... they just didn't cover it as a team worth a crap.

connor is great as a backup or a situational player.

when he starts week after week, teams begin to get film on him and can fully exploit his weaknesses, and thus far they've done an excellent job of it.

i think some fans who are crucifying rivera have underestimated the impact beason will have when he returns to the lineup.

Did I just read a biscuit post containing pictures that were not of boobies?

He is slow, this is no secret. Connor is not a speed LB. Connor is a ball sniffer, meaning it is really hard to deceive him and although he will be going a mile per hour he will be going towards the ball. For a linebacker, this skill is more important than speed, at least in our scheme. Connor can also tackle for the most part. Lastly you have to remember Connor is not physically gifted. He is not fast or tall and his strength is average.

You can tell he plays with desire. This combined with his excellent reading skills he makes a very decent linebacker. I'll have to agree however if it's a matter of Connor 'gettin there', it's as good as gone and Connor in coverage is just silly.

    • It's not sustainable,  although he deserve credit for the win also, as he made clutch plays as he does with every win we have.
    • As much as I would love to sit here and bash on Young.  I can't.   He is absolutely a part of this team winning.  He is the cool hand leading the offense along with the hammer, Rico.  He's making plays on 3rd and 4th downs, that are absolutely helping thus team win.  Is Bryce playing as well as we'd like? Nope. Although he had only 1 week off from a high ankle sprain.   No question he was 100% in the Greenbay game.  I'm not even sure where the team would find a clear upgrade over Byrce.  He is a leader.  In the 4th quarter, he has ice in his veins.  He is a part of why our team is enjoyable to watch again.  Without him, we wouldn't be winning.    Anyways.  Y'all enjoy yet another thread designed to tear down the man.
    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
