Football Outsiders updated Panthers statistics

DVOA by football outsiders:

Offensive efficiency: 8th (down from 6th)

Defensive Efficiency: 31st (unchanged)

Special teams: 32 (we aren't even close to 31st :nonod:)

Despite being 8th in offensive efficiency we took pretty big hits in key areas for offense. Among those:

Yards per drive: 8th (down but I can't remember by how much)

Points per drive: 14th (down from 6th)

TDs per drive: 12th (also down from 6th)

Punt per drive: 12th (I can't remember exact ranking from last week but it was single digits)

Offensive three and outs: 8th (surprised we didn't fall further there)

So things aren't going in the right direction for our offense :( And even though our defense seemed to play better last week we still are ranked at or near the bottom in most key areas so there wasn't much movement to my surprise:

Yards allowed per drive: 30th (36.48)

Points allowed per drive: 32nd

TDs allowed per drive: 30th

Defensive forced punts per drive: 28th

Turnovers per drive: 26th

Three and outs: 29th

I'm not that surprised that our overall defensive ranking didn't improve much but I did thinks some of the "per drive (possession)" would have improved more.

Offensive Yards Per Point: 25th (21st last week)

Defensive Yards Per Point: 29th (29th last week)

Turnover margin: 23rd

The only reason why anyone would assume ur defense was better on Sunday was because the offense didn't do well. By all accounts ur defense haven't improve one bit

In stats because it seems TPTB have placed all the burden on a rookie and the only area of the team that is playing decent.

Sadly, but if the mentality of this team does change they will be finishing their season at

2-14. Offense alone cannot win games no matter how much u try and fix all of ur QB's flaws.

It cuts both ways. Offensive efficiency is effected by lack of defensive turnovers, failure to stop the other team resulting in poor field position and a failure of the special teams to return punts or gain good field position on kickoffs. Our offensive efficiency is hurt tremendously by our defense giving up numerous long drives and allowing the other offense to convert 3rd downs and fourth downs. Our starting field position is among the worse in the league. The fact we have more 80 yard scoring drives than anyone else is a testament to the fact we start a lot at our own 20 or worse.

YPP is not simply how our offensive turnovers effect the other teams offensive's performance except to a small degree. On a pick six or in our end of the field absolutely it has a direct bearing, but so does defensive penalties, lack of ability to stop the other team and poor third down stopping capacity. If our defense does stop the other team's offense then we surrendered no points. On the other hand, if we turn over the ball on downs like we did against Green Bay inside the 10 and Green Bay goes over 90 yards to score on us, that is on the defense not the offense.

Offenses who have to go more than 40 yards to score are going to be less efficient because in the NFL most teams struggle to put together long drives unless they play us. As the stat guy, give us the number of offensive drives our defense has given up of over 40 yards. Our offense would score 30 plus a game if they played our defense every week.

If you want people to pay attention, be credible and believable. That means you have to give a less biased view of things and provide some balance. Totally one way arguments are seen as much less credible than those that present both sides but skew them to their point of view (debating 101).

I forgot the disclaimer. This is directed at the general audience not the troll of the moment.

I'm not going to rehash all of this again. Scoring efficiency (YPP) =/= the same as offensive efficiency.

If you are worried about field position for context our offense is among the worst in starting field position at 23rd.

Our defense's starting field position has been just slightly below average (18th). Yet still fails in every major category.

And field position has no bearing on Yards per drive (it actually would help it if we were really giving up that many short fields). Turnovers per drive. Or Three and outs.

The Scoreability Index is not purely an offensive yardstick. It is, instead, a great barometer of team success. It is a function of many team-wide factors, including general offensive strength, defense and special teams proficiency, turnover differential and Red Zone offense.

Yes it is, and you have been wrong for the past 2 weeks. Yards divided by points. That is a total scoring offensive efficiency ratio. By definition. That's our real life scoring efficiency.

scoring efficiency is how many points we really, actually got in real life footbal from our total yards.

What you are posting is yardage efficiency + expected points(fantasy football works using similar DVOA stats).

And total offenses are ranked by points, not yards! That's what you need to win football games. POINTS! Top 10 offenses are ranked by the number of total points they put up compared to their opponent, not yards.

DVOA = what we are expected to do if we faced a perfect schedule and had an even turnover margin.

YPP = what we actually ended up doing.

DVOA rankings = FANTASY

YPP = REALITY.

You are looking at worthless stats instead of the ones that actually matter. The reason our offense is ranked 25th in YPP is because our offense never meets their DVOA expectations.

8th in DVOA /= to real life ranking.

25th in YPP = real life ranking. 2-7 real life winning-losing record.

Las Vegas. Sports Bookies. Sports Bettors. Power Rankings. They all use YPP. Scoring efficiency(at a more advanced level. because without taking into consideration strength of schedule, those are worthless as well).

    • Any idea what happened to him at LSU? im reading that he was considered a 1st round pick in 2023, had an off 2024 season with only 4 sacks but was also on a horrible FSU team then went to LSU where he was supposed to be on an aggressive defense that should have given him a lot of sacks but he only ended up with one….   was he injured? Did the top SEC competition expose him? What happened? Cause this guy was considered a top prospect .
    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
