Yahoo sports also lists Carolina as having a potential interest in Cutler

Charles Robinson @ Yahoo sports lists Carolina among the teams that may have an interest in Cutler w/ the following comments:

Here’s another team expected to have some cursory interest, but doesn’t appear to have the ammunition to mount a serious push. Carolina has no first-round pick, and while Jake Delhomme is nearing the end of his career, it’s unlikely the Panthers would be willing to mortgage future drafts and go consecutive years without a first-rounder. The one intriguing thought: Julius Peppers. He wants to play in a 3-4 defense, and Denver is in the process of moving into that scheme. Peppers is surely a player Denver would be interested in, and trading a quarterback for another cornerstone at defensive end makes sense. However, coach John Fox seemed adamant at the owner’s meetings that Carolina wasn’t looking to move Peppers. If he changes his mind, the Panthers could quickly become a frontrunner, even if they can’t get a quarterback in return as part of a deal.

I think he's nailed the biggest sticking point for the Panthers, this team believes in building through the draft and going two consecutive years without any 1st round pick would be pretty hard for them to swallow. On the other hand, Cutler is better than any QB you could draft because he's a known commodity...

Another point that has not been made in most of the stuff I've read is that Mike McCoy is now the OC in Denver and that might make Denver more likely to accept Delhomme as part of a trade (or less likely depending on McCoy's opinion of Delhomme).

All of the people in the mainstream media are going to speculate that the Panthers have an interest in Cutler. That doesn't change the fact that it's still mere speculation. The national media doesn't know any better, because they don't follow Fox and Hurney. They just remember Jake's last game and assume they're looking to replace him.

I think they include Carolina in the "short list" because Peppers wants to play in a 3-4 and Denver is switching over to a 3-4, so we have a franchise player that doesn't want to be here and they have a franchise player that doesn't want to be there.

I didn't start this thread because I actually think the Panthers are pursuing Cutler, I just think it's interesting that the Panthers consistently come up in this discussion. I don't think there's any way the Panthers would give up a 1st round pick and that's what it sounds like Denver is looking for.

    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
    • I have no doubt the Canes will come out like gangbusters, huge bounce back from game one - my only concern is Freddie, if he lets in a couple of softies and Dobes stays hot we could be in trouble.
