Is Scott Fowler an idiot or am I just crazy?

...For all the numbers he has already achieved early in his career, he has yet to have a signature, game-winning, deep-in-the-fourth-quarter drive.

I specifically remember Cam scoring the game winning touchdown w/ about 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter vs. Jacksonville.

Does it need to be 1 minute left? Or because it was in a monsoon does it not count?

He is an idiot, but he did say "deep-in-the-fourth-quarter"

I can kinda see not counting that one on the basis of time.

What Fowler is looking for (I think) is one of those Jacksonville in 2003 type drives where it comes down to the absolute final seconds and one last play with everything on the line. Basically, the game ends with us on offense, not on defense.

If that's what he's looking for, then no we haven't had that yet. I believe we will at some point, though it may not necessarily be this season.

I see the argument as well, but he had not said he was clutch, and called that drive a "4th quarter game winning drive" in his previous article, then claim later in the season he didn't have one, wouldn't be an issue.

He flip-flopped.

I think he has a point, just not a great one. Fact is, Cam hasn't really had a drive, save in the monsoon, late in the fourth that wins the game. I know the defense let him down yesterday, but that doesn't negate the fact that he did throw a pick on the first play on what probably would have been the final possession of the game, thereby missing a chance to send it to overtime.

That being said, the kid has nine games under his belt, and "not having seen a winning fourth quarter drive" is like me saying that I haven't seen competent math skills from a two-year-old. Body of work is just too tiny.

Plus, this whole argument is total crap when you get down to it...it's similar to Skip saying Aaron's not the best QB in the league simply because he hasn't had a game-winning fourth quarter drive.

Vince Young has a gang of 4th quarter game winning drives but Id be willing to bet Fowler doesnt consider him one of the best QBs or even "clutch" for that matter. Probably doesnt even consider him a QB. One day we will have 1 standard for all QBs regardless of race or likeability to be judged by.

It happens (though it shouldn't)

People need to remember they're still evaluating a rookie. Great rookie? Sure, but still a rookie, and that means next season will likely look loads better than this one.

That's the biggest reason why I don't get all the people flipping out about him having some bad games as we get later in the year. That sort of thing is to be expected.

    • Jake, to me, will always hold a special place in my heart.  I really feel like for his era, he deserved way more love than he got, and should’ve had more than his one Pro Bowl.  He was a gamer with an underrated rocket arm. but let me tell you, after his Tommy John surgery, when he came back, I can’t remember who it was against, but it think it was a division game, he threw a ball that was supposed to be a throw away, as I think he was under pressure, and that poo floated forever and died right at the boundary where a defender ran over and picked it off.  One of the worst throws I ever saw.  His arm just wasn’t the same after the injury and surgery.  All that to say, that’s what almost every Bryce throw to the sidelines looks like to me.
    • And again, when watching him in college he had one distinct trait that I feel makes a franchise QB - on those plays when everything breaks down around him, he creates one on his own.  He doesn’t rely on or need everyone else.  That play last night on the final drive where he was getting sacked and threw it to Diggs before his knee hit the ground?  He does similar things all the time.  Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, etc., they all do it.  It’s what made Cam so special. but we picked a guy that’s the opposite of that.  He desperately needs someone else to make a play for him because he can’t.  Even that play yesterday on 4th down to Horn.  That wasn’t a great pass.  The defender was late and came down to make a play in the ball and Bryce threw it high and outside where Horn had to leave his feet and really use strong hands to catch it.  We relied on a 5’9” rookie playing in his first pro game to make THAT catch at THAT time bc of the early turnovers and a not great throw.  Crazy.
    • This thread is dumb. But I do think canales gets too cute with play calling and I don't think he's a good coach
