Byron Bell

I don't know what other's see in Bell.. he has got to be one of the worst starting OT's in the game, and I think this link proves it. Those of you who think Otah is not much better than Bell are uninformed. Guy's like Otah do not grow on tree's.. a guy that size with his athletic ability is very rare. Bell is nowhere near Otah as a football player, hands down. Otah has had a knee injury that has kept him out for 2 years.. it's not like he is injury prone.. it has just been one nagging issue. Let's let him heal this knee, and be 100% next year, and you will see the Otah of old.. a run blocking nightmare for teams, and an adequate enough pass blocker. If Otah can not get that knee 100%, then we need to cut bait and go in another direction, because clearly Bell is not the answer.

people WANT him to be good, so they see it that way

Tyler Brayton is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL?

Freeney and Mathis have been the best DE duo for years.....

Indy has the best DE duo for rushing the passer and Det has the best overall DL for rushing......doesn't get any harder than facing that back to back in terms of pass protection

I'm a bell supporter, but I found this little tidbit from an article on PFF to be quite interesting:

That was before the lions game last week.

thoughts, concerns, issues?

Haha, that basically destroyed this thread. Bell hasn't been good at all since Otah left. The fall off in pass protection is a big reason for the offense being less explosive.

Other than the penalties, which he's cut down on Bell has improved quite a bit during the season. Be honest, how many of you complaining about how much Bell sucks have really been paying attention to his development?

the Colts game was probably his best game I've seen as far as how we used him in protection. He seems to be taking on more with every game. Generally we have been trying to get him help on the edge by chipping the edge rusher with a back or tight end, but if you re watch the game we left him to fend for himself quite often and he showed very well. Also got great push on some blocks and helped open up the run lane for both Cam and Dwills long TD runs. Don't believe me? just go re watch on your DVR or go watch the few highlights they have on NFL.com.

Seriously, for this being a place of discussion where we all pull for the same dagum team, there are always people out to try to make an ass out of someone else.

Bell is a rookie, he will have his rookie mistakes, but no need to bash the guy when you haven't really even been paying attention to him specifically.

I wouldn't say Bell sucks, he's just not a starting caliber RT. Who knows what's going to happen with the Carolina offensive line next year. We could either see Bell, Otah if he gets healthy which will probably never happen due to Otah having traded his body with a fat porcelain doll, or Gross if we draft Matt Kalil. Even though he's been ok, the offense had to adjust by adding protection on the right side taking away a potential pass catcher. Bell will be great depth for the future.

I think it is a combination of hatred for Otah because he's so injury prone and Bell's story puts blinders on people around here. I pull for Bell to succeed every time he is out there and hope he can make it in this league. But in all honestly I do not have very high expectations for him. He is not a guy with a huge upside. He is a backup at best.

No Otah hate from me, I love a healthy motivated Otah.

I sarcastically quoted coach in the op to see if anyone else has noticed what I noticed, and apparently not considering a majority of the responses.

Obviously I think higher of the guy than most, I don't honestly believe that he is no different than Otah because they are obviously completely different, but with Bell you've got a young improving player with more upside than people realize.

Another thingy from pro football focus regarding bell after this past game against the colts:

Why the Hype For Byron Bell?

Aside from having a cool name, there’s really little reason to be impressed with Byron Bell (-3.1). It seems announcers mention him in a positive light every time the Panthers take the field but I simply ask why? His game against the Colts was just another disappointment to add to his already long resume. He really is playing like a rookie undrafted free agent that he is. Bell did have a tough matchup against Robert Mathis but allowing his QB to be knocked down three times (one sack and two hits) is never acceptable. He’s now 45th in our Pass Blocking Efficiency rankings at 93.0, which really tells the whole story. Having said that, his work in the run game (-2.6) stood out for all the wrong reasons; he allowed three tackles after minimal gains and graded positively on just one occasion. The “highlight” was a 3rd-and-3 play with 6:42 in Q4 where Robert Mathis was able to slant inside him and make the tackle short of the first down.

questions, comments, concerns?
