Armanti Edwards Progression Thread

So there is no valid reason for having a concern with us drafting a project and not a proven commodity? And still have concerns when they do not produce?

Why in the hell draft a project in the NFL, the pinnacle of the football profession?

How long did it take Johnson to produce? He was surely a project. In his first 3 years he started 4 games. And he wasn't learning a new position and totally new skill sets. I don't know that Edwards will be here beyond his rookie contract but he is not a bust yet.

Most players after the first 2 rounds usually have flaws or they get drafted higher. Players after the third round are definitely projects. Projects are worth it because they cost you little and if they pan out are worth the investment. You hope for every 3 or four projects, you hit one of them. Hurney hit several in the past 2 or 3 years. Look at this year. Bell is our starting right tackle and was an undrafted free agent. Sure he is learning and making mistakes but he was a longshot who has paid out in spades.

If this team wants to become a contender they can't afford to keep making draft mistakes and taking guys like Edwards in the 3rd round and trading a 2nd round pick in order to get him.

Could you please direct me to a team that has never made a questionable trade or pick on draft day?

I think if the team can be a contender after drafting players like Rae Carruth (1st round), Eric Shelton (2nd), Dwayne Jarrett (2nd round), and Rashard Anderson (1st round), then they'll be quite okay after drafting Armanti Edwards in the 3rd for a future 2nd :)

Snaps: 540

Stats: 7 sacks, four hits and 29 hurries. 21 defensive stops

Grade: +5.6 (+13.9 for pass rushing – overall grade held down by eight penalties)

We aren’t really in a position to comment on his rookie year since at that point, we hadn’t yet hit our stride. So, 2008 was our first chance at breaking down the former Georgia Bulldog. In short, we were wowed by what Johnson was able to do, and shocked the Panthers didn’t find a way to get this pass rushing menace on the field more.

His 2008 season was so good that it earned him the eighth highest grade for a defensive end in pass rushing on the year. Sure, his run defense wasn’t great, and he was flagged a few too mant times, but we certainly expected to see more of him, after all, it’s not every player that can turn 11.4% of their pass rushes into pressure.

^^ 2nd season

CJ also has the advantage to contribute more by playing a position that rotates players frequently.

I pray that we begin to give our other WRs such as AE, Tutu, and Pilares playing time soon so they can be evaluated.

He did have a good second season in limited work. His 6 sacks were largely because he had the luxury to not be an everydown DE and could come in fresher than his competition as the game wore on. He was primarily used as a pass rusher which benefitted him greatly. Note when he got more work his third season his sack total went down not up. In addition he couldn't beat out Tyler Brayton because he was poor holding the edge and in the run game. He was getting stronger and learning better technique but was still not a complete DE until his fourth year.

As for WRs, when would they get the work and how many ways can you spread the football. With Smith number 1, Shockey and Olsen numbers 2 and 3 options, LaFell and Nannee being the 3rd and 4th options, Stewart being number 5, exactly how many catches are available for the 6th, 7th, and 8th passing options????
